finally figured out why loading PS modules was so slow on my work laptop: yes, Defender IO interception was part of the issue, but it also turns out that PowerShell walks the entirety of each folder in its module source list, and tries to read every single file within **6** times (one with the real filename, and 5 more times with extensions psd1, psm1, cdxml, dll, and exe).
each project subfolder I had is a separate git repo, and the .git folders have upwards of 7,000 tiny files. multiply by the attempts to open non-existent files and number of different projects, just trying to load a single module would attempt to open and read more than 500,000 files. defender or not, that many files are going to be slow as shit on windows

fwiw I have broken the downloadable version of the PoC, and included a comment showing what's been changed. Annoying that this is necessary, but it should hopefully be enough to keep the skids from directly downloading this from my servers 😔

of course the downside of assembled output is that the logger functions always reports the same filename, and line numbers no longer correspond to the source tree. we do generate a source map that can convert back to original filename and line number, so not all is lost

the results are in: no change in multi-file/dot-source "dev" mode, approximately 85% improvement in assembled "prod" mode. windows filesystem performance is so sad

there's a 90% chance that i am still going to have to use `using module` instead which is going to be great fun figuring out why just typing that sequence of characters absolutely kills my machine (i think it tries to pre-parse available modules and the 9pfs/defender interplay is Bad)

finally broke down and decided to write a powershell module build system because I am sick and tired of the hacks required to write maintainable modules and the complete inability to import custom types without `using module` or cloning the types to be loaded in script context as well as interactive context and just praying that the VM considers them to be the same type (which sometimes it does not, even if the definitions are identical)
