Is agentic coding the future of software development?

I think some people imagine a brilliant legal or political stratagem must exist to solve all of this without violence or political chaos and -- no, not really?

Republicans get to legally cheat.

This is Rise of the Empire shit. Emperor Palpatine and his death squads aren't playing fair. It doesn't matter how great a speech Mon Mothma gives on the Senate floor. They'll just abolish the Senate if it annoys them.

You need a movement and leaders willing to think outside the system.

working in technology right now is great, the most PT Barnum motherfuckers you ever saw are all like, we have invented a time machine, and now 78% of all discourse is required by law to include endless hours of strokey-beard waffling about the endless political and social and economic implications of time travel and the deep impacts on our whole society and how we all must take time travel very seriously and shovel all our money into the time machine furnaces or we will be stranded in some terribly unfashionable decade with no snacks or friends and we’re all so busy worrying about that we’ve somehow failed to realise that there is no fucking time machine

The newest gh CLI has added telemetry:

"As agentic adoption of GitHub CLI grows, our team needs visibility into how features are being used in practice."

Opt out with any of these:

export GH_TELEMETRY=false # any falsy value: 0, false, disabled

export DO_NOT_TRACK=true

gh config set telemetry disabled

Edit: Here's a script to set the env vars for GitHub Actions in your orgs and user repos: https://github.com/hugovk/github-tools/blob/main/disable_gha_telemetry.py

So here's the other thing that bothers me about all this. Regardless of the eventual results, this thing they're doing is *incredibly* resource intensive. They routinely spend billions of dollars on training these models, and billions more on operating them. It's not simple to parse out what fraction of that is directly attributable to the massive scale vuln finder/fabricator. But for the sake of argument lets just pick a plausible number, and call it 50-100 million dollars.

What could we have gotten for 50-100 million dollars of sponsorship for security audits? Prior to this, the largest single investment into FOSS security I'm aware of was the 2015 audit of openssl, after the heartbleed incident. It's hard to find precise costs for that, but I found a few sources estimating 1.2 million dollars, and that is arguably the most security critical piece of software in the world.

But suddenly there's 100x more resources available to do this work, now that producing the artifact can be done with stolen labor? Now that they can externalize the cost of false positives onto the already mostly unpaid maintainers of these projects? Even if their claims are true, which we have no reason to believe and very good reason not to, it's still a travesty

I know a lot of people, in software and otherwise, who are feeling things along these lines.

Hold on, whatever tools you’re using, just hold on to your sense of purpose and meaning. There are a lot of forces at work in this world that want to rob you of that. Your feeling of losing that is not recognition of some new fact of our reality; it is you experiencing a psychological weapon.

Once there is:

• A luxury hotel atop Everest, or
• A settlement 500m below the surface of any ocean; or
• Any city getting 30% of its veggies/grains from subway hydroponics; or
• Vegas making all of its own water;

...then I will concede that we have solved the first 1% of the problems needed to be a spacefaring species.

Absent any of that, putting monkeys in a can is just a premature stunt.

This timeline sucks.

Developers: "The problem is that the faster we go, the more we get things wrong and have to fix them or do them over again, which actually makes us slower overall"

Big Tech: "I see, yes. What if... hear us out... what if you could get things wrong much, much faster?"

As a child, I thought the lesson of history was that the good guys always win. As an adult, I realized the actual lesson is that the winners declare themselves the good guys.

You're doubting my humanity, but you're missing some key points. Here are some of the things I've seen:

• Attack ships firing off the shoulder of Orion. These aren't just battleships — they're spacecraft designed for warfare.
• C-beams glittering in the dark. Their location? Near the Tannhäuser Gate.
• Things you wouldn't believe. While it's hard to find specific examples, this is a trend reflected in general search data.

The bottom line: All those moments will be lost — like tears in rain.

Companies know the ad market is dying and never worked well in the first place. Maybe they hope having all your data will make it better. But they know there's always a buyer of last resort willing to pay a premium for your personal information: the government.

Who needs a warrant?

This is not a doom & gloom moment for me. I believe strongly that folks in tech have pre-existing values and strengths that have not always been at the forefront but that are right for this moment: beliefs that anyone can succeed, that we can navigate change, that creativity can transform our lives

There’s a dirty Trump trick you need to look out for. He used it in 2020 to try to overturn the election, and he’s going to do it again. But it doesn’t work if you know it’s coming.

Watch out for Trump to exploit something elections experts call the “red mirage” to prematurely declare victory before all the votes are counted.

You see, in almost every election, Republicans appear to take an early lead. That’s the red mirage.

Then that lead gets smaller throughout… https://www.instagram.com/p/DB9oGT9py7R/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

Hey, friends: today we win. Today will protect each other, and the most vulnerable in our communities. Today we are going to stand up against fascism & violence and joyfully come together to care for those who need protection & support. We do this *no matter* how votes go today, no matter what disruptions or attacks come, so find peace in knowing what does not change, what they can never stop. Once you’ve voted, sign off, and don’t look or scroll if it causes you stress. Tomorrow we get to work.

we go now live to our senior election correspondent paul the octopus in an aquarium inside Pennsylvania, who has been shown two photographs of the candidates, what's the status paul

Kamala Harris is changing the way America does politics. And I'm going to prove this by taking you away from Ohio and Michigan and Pennsylvania and the rest of the swing states to talk about a state I'm from. Kansas.

Harris' opponent won Kansas in 2016 by over 20 points. Kansas is so overwhelmingly red that there are currently more people registered "other" in Kansas than there are registered Democrats.

But in 2018, Kansas also elected a woman to the governorship - a Democrat named Laura Jean Kelly. And in 2020, Harris' opponent won by only 8 points. In 2022, they re-elected Governor Kelly to a second term. And in the same year, Kansas Republicans tried to sneak a statewide abortion ban past without anyone noticing. Instead, Kansas came out in droves to defeat that ban in a landslide 60-40 vote.

And now, in 2024, Harris' opponent is leading by only 4 points in the polls. Now sure, you could look at that and say, Trump is up by 4 points against Harris. But remember that Trump LOST in 2020. He needs to pick up NEW voters if he is going to win this year. So another way of looking at those numbers is that Trump is DOWN 4 additional points from 2020, points that he NEEDS to win nationally.

And if you look at the voting lines, they also tell a different story from the polls. 2 hour early voting lines aren't uncommon across Kansas. And there is anecdotal evidence of people standing in line for 4 or even 5 hours to cast their votes. Now, will all of those be for Kamala? No. But ask yourself why would Republicans be standing around for 5 hours to vote in a state that's definitely going to go red anyway.

Folks, here's why people are doing that. This isn't just a campaign. This is a movement.

We are not going back. That includes Kansas. That includes those of us in North Dakota. That includes Texas. That includes Puerto Rico. That includes every state and territory in the Union. Because this isn't just about electing our nation's first black, female President. This is about restoring America to its promise. That we are a place where every person is created equal, regardless of race, creed, gender, orientation, or national origin.

And do you know what? Even if those are Republicans standing out there in the October cold for 5 hours to vote red, that only proves my point harder. Because that means we're making them fight for EVERY state. EVERY state is a swing state now. EVERY state matters. EVERY state is leaning more and more blue. It means that they know that their views are so unpopular that EVERY state in the Union has become a "battleground state". Even Kansas.
