This website is a project of the HiPED Lab--Ellen Berrey (University of Toronto), me, Alex Hanna (DAIR), @nathanckim (DAIR, University of Michigan), and Kristen Bass (University of Toronto)--and the HiPED Advisory Collective.
Join @DAIR as we launch a new resource on student organizing. Our new website, “A Decade of Mass Campus Protests: An Archive of U.S. and Canadian Higher Ed Activism in the 2010s“, highlights protest, especially anti-racist protest, during the turbulent 2010s.

“AI” won’t solve Indigenous peoples’ healthcare gaps. We speak with @keoni, CTO of Te Hiku Media, about his work on Indigenous data sovereignty, and why it’s worth being skeptical when the “AI" industry says it cares about preserving Indigenous languages. Indigenous languages are often hidden to LLMs, for good reason. We speak with @keoni, CTO of Te Hiku Media, about his work on Indigenous data sovereignty, and why it’s worth being skeptical when the “AI" industry says it cares about preserving Indigenous languages. Meta’s PR machine is working overtime. Tech CEOs are writing “AI” memos left and right, and there’s plenty of hype to pop. We dissect Gates’ and Zuckerberg’s blogs about “superhuman AI” in Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000’s latest episode “Manifesting the End of Tech Bro Manifestos”!

Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000, Episode 85:
… in which @alex and I sift through the ramblings of billionaires who understand neither the world we live in nor the tech they’re selling.
I'm incredibly excited to announce that I've signed a contract with @themitpress for a new book! It's tentatively entitled NET WORKS, and it's about ImageNet, a dataset of 14 million photos scraped from the web. If it wasn't for ImageNet, we likely wouldn't have "AI" as we currently know it.
I've been thinking about this book for at least five years now, and I'm very excited to finally write it. Thanks to the great folks at MIT Press for helping make it a reality.
Reminder: Bill Gates has only had 2 jobs. Tech CEOs are writing “AI” memos left and right, and there’s plenty of hype to pop. @emilymbender and I dissect Gates’ and Zuckerberg’s blogs about “superhuman AI” in Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000’s latest episode “Manifesting the End of Tech Bro Manifestos”!
Waymo workers have to clean WHAT? It’s come to light that Waymo uses even more human laborers than they want us to believe, and those workers deal with some pretty graphic stuff. Go check out the Bay Area Current article by Stephanie Reist.
The reason for layoffs isn’t what you think. We dispel 5 common myths in my new video, Myths Around AI and Productivity. The second myth is that "AI" is the reason for recent layoffs, but a deeper look tells a different story. Companies are laying off people to invest in "AI", or are hoping that it'll pay off in the future. Full video: https://youtu.be/3BO0iy91lfU

🙅🏽No, AI is not helping worker productivity🙅🏽 We dispel 5 common myths in my new video, Myths Around AI and Productivity. The first myth is that AI will improve productivity, which studies not only largely contradict, but sometimes suggest the opposite effect.

As @alex and I write in The AI Con (see cp 6): even though the Boosters and the Doomers like to portray themselves as holding down opposite extremes of opinions on "AI", they are two sides of the same coin.
