Insects as #food can be studied in ancient human populations by looking at genes coding for enzymes degrading insect chitin, and also by analyzing remaining DNA in dental tartar on human #fossils. This is pretty cool.
Turns out Homo sapiens mostly stopped eating insects in Eurasia a while ago, while other species and Homo sapiens populations outside of Eurasia continued. In general this is explained by interactions between ecological and cultural factors.
This is really interesting, especially as we are today in a situation where we need to seriously reconsider entomophagy as an option in the Western world.
We should not forget that this cultural division is nowadays very impacted by systemic racism, and the fact that it has biological genetic manifestations doesn't change this!
