So, who do we think is going to be awarded the FIFA peace prize this year, then?

#NobelPeacePrize

Þulur, in Old Norse, are poetic lists. Snorri Sturlasson produced lists of recognised kennings (poetic circumlocutions) for the gods and heroes and various kinds of animals, in Skáldskaparmál, a book of poetics included in his Edda.

Other skaldic poets produced their own þulur, like the anonymous Fugla heiti (c.1300), which lists birds. See here:

https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3241

This list caught my imagination, so I wondered if I could do something similar, using British birds only, and an updated verse form.

I can, as it turns out.

The following is the final stanza of a first draft:

House martin, treecreeper,
sparrowhawk and woodlark,
nightjar and meadow pipit,
short-eared owl.
Avocet and curlew,
tawny owl and wheatear,
capercaillie, hooded crow,
hobby, snipe, and quail.

Even at six stanzas, my list is far from finished; several species are still looking for their place. I would also like the names of the birds to describe a journey from the garden and out to sea. Expansion and refinement remain, therefore.

If you’d like a go, then have at it; I stole the idea; you can do the same, or something similar.

Looks like I have made a mistake. (Another one? you say. Indeed, says I.)

I have been working on an ePub of The Complete Norwegian Folktales and Legends of Asbjørnsen & Moe, under the impression that a single file with all 150 texts and >300 illustrations would land at more than half a gigabyte. After all, the #Vellum file has grown that big.

But no.

After compiling the work, the #ePub turns out at around 65MB, which is manageable on modern systems.

It's still too big to sell on #Amazon, because their download fees, which they take out of royalties, would make it necessary for me to bump the price up by about $10, which is just stupid.

So, here's the new strategy:

Amazon: the whole collection split into 15 volumes at necessarily inflated prices. (Customers may like giving Bozo their money; he's not stealing from me.)

Ko-fi: the whole collection in a single 65MB ePub (no-DRM) that can be stored wherever you store stuff, and sideloaded on to any ereader or app, at a price that is less than a quarter of what the full 15 volumes costs on Amazon.

More information will be forthcoming.

When the whole public sector uses MS Teams, you can't really be surprised when a school pupil creates a chat group, and adds everyone he can think of: friends, teachers (past, present, and unknown), consultants, (local) politicians, psychologists, engineers, doctors, etc.

Unfortunately, you can't really be surprised when one of the added school kids posts racist epithets to the whole group without checking the list of participants, either.

To grupper som ikke tas med i diskusjoner om norsk skole: elevene og lærerne.

Ser ut til at alle glemmer «elevens stemme», når elevene ikke presterer på #PISA-undersøkelsen.

#ScribesAndMakers 15. September: What's a situation where you feel a ';' definitely works better than a '.' ?

Don't get me started...

My editing is done. All that remains is the external editing (which will have to wait until after Christmas).

The Draug is coming.

#Borgfreden er over, panikken over årets #PISA-resultater sprer seg, og jeg ser meg nødt til å ta fram bildet. Igjen.

Dette kom som et slag under beltestedet, da vi ikke har prøvd noe som helst for å forbedre resultatene. #skoletut #pisa

#WritersCoffeeClub 4. September: If you work digitally, what application do you use? If analog, what do you write on?

I make notes in @TiddlyWiki, and then I use those notes to write #TeXLaTeX code in any old plain-text editor. I input that code into the appropriate preamble, and compile a document from there.

If I write in analogue (note spelling, Yanks!) I will choose any old notebook and any old lead pencil. (I haven't used a pen in more than ten years after a particularly bad leak.)

"Landesorg" er min nye bortforklaring.

I like it when Websites cover the screen in a cookie or subscription notice. By the time the page has loaded, I have forgotten why I clicked on the link, and there's no visual clue to remind me. So I close the page and continue happily with my day.

Or perhaps I should ditch the apps altogether, and use the Web interface...

Hai guise!

My Masto client hasn't been updated in the last 8 months, while #Mastodon has introduced all sorts of news bells and whistles. I fear I may be missing out. So here's my question:

What is the most up-to-date Mastodon #app (#iOS/ #iPadOS) available? And will it make me happy?

Cheers!
