Extremely disappointed to report that @rmcretro is a slopsist :( He used Claude to code a scanning app: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J32LFC1NbCA

Access to a huge community of skilled retrocomputer enthusiasts and he has to default to the orphan-crushing machine :|

Let me scream it once again: *It's not what you do with the Ai that's the problem, it's what it costs us all!*

A slopsist is someone who believes that _their_ use is harmless because it's "for a good cause" or whatever guff. Disgusting.

To adapt an oft-popular quote: Using Ai for preservation is like f*cking for virginity.

I cannot begin to tell you how daunting it was to undertake drawing a rotated embossed coin head in just 16x16 pixels with only 3 colours, but I did it!

The discord icon was adapted and shaded from the now defunct DiscordMessenger project

Been on Humanbrew for the past week and it's been pretty fun! It's dedicated to making homebrew games by humans for humans!

Got a great mix of devs from the PS1, Mega Drive, Wonderswan, GBA, Dreamcast, DOS scenes and more!

Discord link is below, already past 1000 members!

@Krita The Text Properties Docker appears in the bottom right of the screen with a bunch of stuff in it. When I try to scroll it, the properties get changed as they go past.

THIS IS THE REASON I DON'T USE #GIMP!

Now I have another pane taking away from my layer list which sits there permanently unless I micromanage its size, position and visibility whenever I need to create text. It doesn't just contextually appear and disappear like with the text-properties Window.

When I first tied to move it out of the way, I got this piece of genius UI (2nd picture). Trying to pull out the side pane to expand it just resized the layers pane instead :| (3rd picture)

Everything about this is terrible. It's less usable, more work to micromanage, and a constant burden on the user who has to fight with it every step of the way.

I'm not going to file a bug, @Krita, because this isn't a single concise issue, it's an intractable gamut of disregarding user experience by following trends and copying other software no matter how deep the rabbit hole of insanity goes.

You can either take heed of these toots or you can continue driving your users away but "Dockers are fundamentally unsuited to this task" is not an actionable issue that won't just get deleted immediately and I'm not arguing with the designers who would ship such faulty UI in the first place.

There's a reason I keep going back to Paint Shop Pro 7 from 25 years ago and it's not because of functionality.

You removed the text-edit dialog. Yes, it could get in the way, but it was a window -- that thing that Window Managers were invented to manage -- and now it's a custom "Docker" which didn't even appear when I used the text tool. In fact, you acknowledge that this is stupid by adding a "Open Text Properties" button to the Tool Options button. I have to be aware that I need to have this pane somewhere in my workspace to format text.

Is it under the View menu where UI is turned on and off? No, of course not! The Window menu? Of course not! Can I right-click on the top-chrome (menu/toolbar) to bring up a list of togglable UI? Of course not! It's in Settings > Dockers, hidden in a list too tall to fit on my screen! (The "Open Text Properties" button doesn't mention that this is a "Docker" either so good luck working out what a Docker even is in the first place)

@jf_718 I think that's of a piece with people haunting review sites in the hope of justifying their purchases (e.g. this used to happen a lot with digital cameras). If I'd signed up to use asbestos bought from fascists in everything I made, I'd be trying to justify it too.

That every single software, app, or platform I rely in has gaping feature and design holes in it – all of which cost me and every other user money in lost productivity – and yet those fuckers keep ignoring the shit they should be fixing in favour of more "AI" features is just constantly incredibly annoying

The shit we're forced to use is full of beginner design mistakes and then they just turn around and keep inventing new ways to break things every day

This industry is so frustrating

There are some flaws, but it is endlessly engaging -- A History of Every Video Game Genre: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dbgdi7BzMR0

The topic of game genres interests me because I believe that regardless of the labels invented for the purpose ("Metroidvania", "Soulslike"), there must exist a set of indivisible axis that describe the constraints of a game rather than merely its features. "Open world" is not a genre, it's an implementation style, but it does suggest that games can contain a given level of simulation vs. rigidity.

Look, I don't need to be needlessly antagonistic directly in the replies but pot ⇄ kettle much? FujiNet is slopcoded.

Thomas is just as much contributing to the slopfest destroying the #retrocomputing community as the supposed "scams" he's decrying. Something about throwing rocks and glasshouses?

Yes the project is sorely needed to bring purpose to retro computers. No it hasn't been a particular success but now its permanently tainted and like I said from the start, I do not share, promote or otherwise talk about slopcoded projects and I have simply stopped contributing to the retrocomputing sphere because of them.

You have to understand that discovering that #Linux and every bit of critical #opensource software (#Firefox, #libreoffice) have been slopped is like after finally ditching cars for public transport you discover that it’s been bought out by by a combination of private equity, EA, Nēstle, Monsanto, CocaCola, _and_ Lockheed Martin, whereupon they fired every qualified driver and replaced them with an Uber-like gig economy where your train driver today is Gareth who once played some weird Japanese train game on a PS2 emulator one time but has an “Outstanding” 97.6% rating.

I just wanted to get somewhere and get stuff done. This isn’t my fight, this isn’t my day job. I already did my part by ditching Windows and now you want me to sort out your problem you so utterly failed to prevent when you breathlessly announced the partnership as “Strengthening the Community”.

Fuck you and the rent economy you rode in on, I’m not your goddamned saviour and I certainly don’t contribute to fashtech, which you now are.

Okay, finally decided for sure: My writing style from now on will be that "artificial intelligence" will be abbreviated to "Ai" -- capital A, lowercase i -- so as to 1. not be mistaken for "AL" in some fonts (I'm sure a lot of Al's are having a bad time rn) and 2. the word intelligence is not deserving of a capital i because there is no intelligence whatsoever in the slop machine

Me: I would like to download my data please
Google: Sure, it's 880 GB, here are twenty 50 GB gz files
Me: Uh, okay, that's quite a lot... Hey, why is this only downloading at like 128 KB/s?
Google: You have six days remaining to download your data...
