eTextbooks for university courses have somehow gotten worse over the last several years. The system my uni now uses requires you to rent the ebook on one platform, access it through a second platform, and then download an app to actually read it on a third platform. And while it says you can “download” the book, I’m not sure what that actually does because you need an internet connection because the app freezes without internet due to the fact that it keeps trying to load an AI study assistant that interrupts your reading abruptly to insist you should interact with it about the section you just finished every 2 or 3 pages.

Oh, and my university won’t even sell you a hard copy of the textbooks anymore. This is the only official, legal way to access it.

Thinking about how the first internet in Cyberpunk 2077 was made unusable by rogue AI, and how they had to put up the “black wall” to block AI from the second internet.

Honestly, starting to feel more realistic than ever, but instead of godlike superintelligences, there’s a decent chance we wind up with an internet where the other side of the blackwall is just garbled nonsense data and endless regurgitated slop that has descended into madness with model collapse. Okay, the ad people have finally figured out how to get me.

I just got an ad for a cruise and I watched it. Why? Do I want to go on a cruise? No. Do I have resources to consider going on a cruise? No. But they did have Sarah Michelle Geller being elegant and telling me about the luxury of the cruise, and Buffy has hacked my brain so that I'll listen to her no matter what she says.

Artist/creative friends: is it extractive or exploitative when talking to an artist or creator to say “I’d be curious to see it if you want to share”?

Had an interaction today that is sitting with me wrong, and just wondering what others think. I often ask about people’s creative projects because I like to know about the things that they are passionate about. I don’t share it or anything like that, just know a lot of folks like me enjoy sharing their creative stuff and talking about it.

It’s funny, 7 years into transition and I still love when the doctor’s office or a technician asks if I might be pregnant. 🤭
