Had the privilege of attending a lunch 'n learn with a presentation provided by a low-vision user. The presenter preferred using screen magnifcation and graciously showed what their experience was like navigating a website.

Unlike page zoom, magnifier is like binocular vision - it only exposes a small area of the page. Reflow is not triggered by screen magnifier tools.

Some quick suggestions they provided that stuck with me:

@davatron5000 We think about power consumption *constantly* over here on the Safari/WebKit team. It’s a huge part of why we do what we do. And don’t do.

It’s why we provide developer tooling to measure energy usage inside Safari Web Inspector.

The web would be much better off if everyone making websites would think about energy. “Mobile first” should have included low power consumption as a priority! The planet would be far better off, too.

Planning a #conference? Include Mastodon at least as prominently in your materials as you do other social media. If you ask presenters or attendees for handles, ask for their Mastodon handle. This is an important opportunity for the Fediverse to reach, welcome, and engage key global audiences. #academia #event

A possibly useful Mastodon norm: emoji in user names to identify folks who are eager for amplification and engagement vs. those who are not, such as those who would prefer you ask permission first.

Just having an awareness that both types of people exist here is helpful.

Is there a design tool that uses CSS?

I mean like actually uses CSS, none of this not quite flexbox "auto-layout" stuff.

The gap between designers and developers mental models is growing by the day, especially with the rate of new CSS features these days.

We should be able to work with a shared mental model, that would be greatly helped by design tools embracing CSS and not recreating it from scratch.
