Rewriting my thoughts from elsewhere:

People come to the fedi and then start throwing accusations when they meet the resistance to LLMs because the fedi is the only set of social media technologies that are explicitly built with the design goal of resisting the enclosure of creativity and thought, and “enclosure of creativity and thought” is not a thought that you’re allowed to have in the main stream.

The idea is completely impossible for them to internalise because their entire world rejects it.

But it’s completely central to the fedi and the people who were there at the beginning.

So they start segfaulting.

After another two releases like GPT5, we’re going to start seeing cogs turn in even hyper cooked executive brains. And by that time they’ll have done the political manoeuvring (aka firing people and driving down wages) that they wanted to do under the banner of AI.

Bets on when the LLM bubble is going to burst?

On the basis that “the market can remain irrational longer than you can stay sane”, I’m saying five years:

- another two years for two cycles of “this is a world changing release” which is actually incremental improvements at best
- one year of the industry rapidly pivoting as the hype becomes obviously visible
- two years for the financial mechanisms involved to start to move

Roughly end of year four I’m expecting some dawning realisation that in the drive for efficiency, major companies have turned their code bases into big balls of mud, and they’ve forbidden their engineers from building or maintaining the skills that could get them out of this situation.

Best take I’ve seen recently is that generative AI doesn’t “democratize” art, it it _commodifies_ it.

Saying that AI “democratises” art is highly anti-intellectual. It’s embedding the idea that the pesky “experts” and “elites” have AI the control, and now we can take it back!

In truth, before generative AI art has always been in the hands of the people, far more so than research or STEM subjects. Art is _defined_ as the output of the feelings and meaning of a population and the limitations of the artist. It is, in many ways by definition, the most democratised thing in existence.

Generative AI appropriates the act of creation from the culture that used to support it, removes all context and intent. It takes what was once the refined mood of an era, strip mines your heritage and packages it into a form the capitalists take from you, own, and rent back to you.

Generative AI art is not democratisation, it’s the opposite. It’s commoditising an integral part of us and then seeking rent on it.

OpenAI wanting to purchase Chrome follows the recent trend of “rich asshole” attacks from tech-bros where if they tried to build their delusional society themselves they be told to fuck right off, but they’ve found this One Weird Trick where if you have more money than god you can buy out huge chunks of existing tooling and force yourself into the Overton window.

I’ve been on Firefox, for all its faults, for years and Chromium will still exist, but if they wanted a way to push their failing business model into a place where people would be forced to prop them up despite the fact that LLMs just aren’t profitable then they’ve found it. Rich grifters always seem to.

Fucking parasites.

Ok. I am directly involved in a politics discussion between senior staff and people actually doing the work.

Can I go hide under a rock.

Second time using the walking pad. Played an hour of Factorio.

Geeking out about this something major. Something about moving while at my station just feels awesome.

Interested to see how this works out longer term.
