15th Aug 2026. What's one writing habit you've developed that genuinely helps?
Don't push on from writing a book's opening scene until I've found its tone.
Probably from a field fire in Bovey Tracey. Devon Fire Service website says it's out, but I expect the smell can carry 40 miles on tonight's NE light wind.
Another night too hot to sleep in our 4th or 5th heatwave of this summer. Just opened my big bedroom window and stood at it enjoying the light movement of slightly cooler air on my skin, better than was happening with just the little window open anyway. Except, there's a smell of woodsmoke in the air. Faint but unmistakable. Wildfire somewhere on Dartmoor tonight?

11th Aug 2026. Which shelved project are you itching to get back to?
My second stage play, written way back before PCs and email submissions, was lost to me when I posted off a freshly typed copy I never saw again and my master copy got accidentally destroyed. Thirty years later, I still have pangs of regret for that little world I created. I think it was good. Not itching to recreate it though. I've considered it once or twice, but it's too much work.

10th Aug 2026. Does your writing playlist change depending on the scene you're writing?
I don't have a writing playlist. I might listen to mood music when planning part of a story, but I prefer to write in as near to silence as I can get. Definitely no music. If the weather permits then my window will be open beside me, allowing in sounds of nature and that's pleasant, unless our uphill human neighbours are partying in their garden.

10th Aug 2026. How willing are you to take risks with your creative work?
Very willing. In fact, I can't remember anything I've ever put out being safe. Doesn't seem worth my effort otherwise.

9th Aug 2026. What's the smallest detail you've researched for a story?
In order to create my fictional theory of a relationship between dark matter and dark energy, I researched what happens when subatomic particles interact with atomic nuclei, quarks, and gluons. They're all pretty small.

7th Aug 2026. What part of your world-building came together almost effortlessly?
The journalling of its process for this WIP, one of those in which the worldbuilding is climbing a mountain. Journalling it made the step-by-step progress enjoyable as well as efficient.
6th Aug 2026. Tell us about a drummer whose work you appreciate.
Of all the brilliant rock drummers in my youth, I remember John Bonham as the best.
In this decade, my favourite live jazz singer Melody Gardot has introduced me to the spellbinding Brazilian drummer Jorge Bezerra.
Very different musicians. Both of them magicians.
Sometimes the best path only makes sense with time. May you walk your path in good company, even if it's only your own, especially if it's your own.

4th Aug 2026. What's the first thing you think of when you hear the word troll?
A dull-witted, difficult, potentially dangerous creature. Two species bear the same label: non-humans who live beneath bridges in the countryside; and humans whose unpleasantness stains the internet.

2nd Aug 2026. What's one scene you cut that you still think about?
There isn't one. I've never cut a scene without being certain it's what a book needed. Job done.

2nd Aug 2026. How wholesome do you consider your creative work? What does wholesome mean to you?
I don't consider the concept of 'wholesome' in relation to my writing. I suspect that people who use the word might be those who pass moral judgements on the work of others, in efforts to exert control over social permission regarding what 'should' be written and read.

29th Jul 2026. From soft to hard, where do your tastes fall on the Science Fiction scale?
I read good SF across the board, avoiding the hard SF that's infected with right wing shit. What I write is character based, so in that respect toward the 'soft' side of SF, although my research is 'hard'.
