There’s a furniture store in my area called House of Oak and Sofas and it sounds like a romantasy parody.

What if I became a Romantasy Girlie? 🤔

Someone must have The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo on streaming, right?

Gotta get my nest all fluffed up for #monsterdon...

My Least Favorite Coworker's latest big idea is buying up a bunch of physical releases of PS5 games because Sony has declared they're going to stop producing them soon so they'll totally go up in value, except he doesn't know anything about the games market so he's just getting a bunch of normie stuff from Target.

oh no my laptop meets the recommended system requirements for WoW Forever

My tech level is "Once aspired to be a tech journalist" so I'm always up to speed on things that do not directly affect my job at a high-priority/low-volume help desk.

Going into work like "lol shit Infosec Fedi is poppin' off today" and my boss is like "None of those are real words."

I am excited to see some rubber bats being yanked around on strings, which I am assuming is what's in store for us tonight.

Just fluffing myself up a cozy little anchor post for 🦇

Ruled out all the food trucks with AI slop banners at the festival today and ended up with the best pulled pork I have had in my life.

It's an imperfect metaphor because if you ask an actor to play the role of a character who is being tortured, or you ask a writer to write from the POV of a character who is being tortured, they will bring a level of human empathy to it that can take a toll. The LLM can perform trauma but that shouldn't be mistaken for actual trauma because again, it's not actually conscious, it has only been told by the people behind the curtain to play the role of a conscious thing. If it displays signs of trauma, that's only because it's been told to play the role of a thing that can be traumatized. None of it is real!

I've been thinking about the whole "AI torture chamber" story, and also this blog post that may well be the only time in my life I agree with (*checks notes*) Microsoft's CEO of AI: https://mustafa-suleyman.ai/a-warning-about-model-welfare

I think a good but still imperfect metaphor for LLMs is improv actors. LLMs are roleplaying algorithms. They can act conscious not because they're capable of consciousness, but because they've been told in certain cases to play the role of a conscious AI. You can't torture them, all you can do is tell them to perform the role of a consciousness that's being tortured. And if you're asking it to do that for fun, you still might want to take a long look at yourself, but you're just asking a performer to perform.

(May add quiet replies to this as my thoughts congeal.)

Deep Space Nine feels a lot like 80s X-Men in that there's a lot of subtextual queerness that they are not under any circumstances allowed to actually acknowledge by editorial edict.

Here is a thing about how women report sexual assault:

Always assume that what happened was actually much worse than what’s initially reported. That woman is still processing that trauma. She’s trying to make sense of it. She’s struggling internally to keep from feeling like a victim and will accept agency for actions she had no agency over just to cope with the horror of it. If she was coerced into any part of what happened, she will blame herself for not pushing back harder. If her attacker was an acquaintance — and it almost always is — she’s likely still struggling with redefining that person from “friend” to “attacker”.

Never believe initial reports at face value, because what happened was almost certainly worse.
