I’m sure that nothing bad can happen if someone gets root access on a device that can deliver hundreds of kilowatts on demand.

Sure, the software is thoughtless and shoddy, but I’m sure the hardware is full of failsafes, right? Right?

This stuff is awesome, and makes me thankful that the most complex bit of internationalisation I’m likely to have to worry about any time soon is supporting cyrillic error messages.

Sometimes i worry about the security of the robots we make, but i am reasonably happy that we’ve done a good job with the safety systems. At least our devices operate in private networks and controlled spaces with trained people, etc.

Turns out some companies don’t bother with any of that stuff and just yolo stuff straight into the consumer market.

Reasons not to use indoor-spec cables out of doors, part 95: uv stable pigments.

Today included trying to find the other end of a purple patch cable, when all the cables outside the container were mysteriously blue or black.

Once again, someone in management has pushed a fragile and poorly specced log scraping tool to production, made it business critical, and it then broke as soon as soon as someone looked at it funny.

This is the third time. Each previous time I made a new thing to make it easier to do this the right way, without propping up everything on janky regexes, and yet here we are, again. We have so little ability to learn from our mistakes 🫩

Looking at adding a syntax highlighting plugin to obsidian, and the security situation seems to be pretty woeful.

Oh, how I wish someone would invent sandboxing. Looks like plugins are implemented in javascript, which as everyone knows is a language that's entirely impossible to sandbox.

Grenoble airport security upping the ante with “abandoned luggage will be immediately destroyed”. I’m assuming they have gaze-tracking cameras and hidden gun turrets, so if you put down you bag and look away they pop out and blast it to bits.

This all came from the office christmas meal. I didn’t go (hard to eat and drink in a mask!) even though I desperately miss the old days and really want that sort of communal social activity again, especially at this time of year.

Everyone else just considers it a risk worth taking, cos covid is just a cough, you know? 🫩

Update: 7 people are off ill. Two other people have lost their voices but are still in the office. A couple of other people are in the office coughing.

Only one person has tested positive for covid 🤔

Overheard conversation at work today: (coughing) yeah, I’d rather be at work doing something than being stuck at home ill all day (further coughing) anyway, I don’t think I’m contagious now (cough)

I’m so glad I still mask.

My ipad seems to be getting a lot of adverts for dubious treatments for baldness, enlarged prostate, worn out knees, neuropathy… clearly some advertiser has decided from the tracking data they’ve collected that I must be an old man.

This didn’t happen until I started researching auto-vectorisation and SIMD in #csharp and I’m not sure whether the only people who care about it are broken old men, or whether the act of learning about this stuff turns you into one, like some kind of lovecraftian ghoul, and if I should be concerned about this.

I’m so glad that almost all my work has been in small organisations or startups. I am insufficiently motivated by money to want to work 12 hour days (excluding commutes!) for no particular purpose (which is nonetheless still stressful, somehow).

I wish I hadn’t learned the word “intrapreneur” from this article, though. Fucking linkedin-ass neologisms are not welcome in my brain, but I don’t know how to get them out again 😭
