related but not about apple, we have noticed schools moving to be far more like prisons and attempting to make good little authoritarian cogs in very liberal places for a long time. well before school shootings were a thing.

not saying we should bring back latch key kids, but more freedom would be better for everyone

we are trans, had supportive parents in an era where trans kids were effectively unknown. we are also parents to two wonderful adults.

there was never a point in our own childhood or our kids where the level of surveillance available today would have made anything better for anyone.

it's funny to me how self hosting is becoming popular again, for us it's always been about owning the hardware our data lives on. that hasn't stopped being true since we setup an old pc in a colo in 2003 to host email and web stuff.

eventually we decided that was worth doing for everyone and designed a system circa 2014 to host things on a year or two old mobile phone(if that sounds under powered see the recent webserver on a dead vape post).

honestly most of the stuff to build it already existed as standards back then, file serving and perms via dav, dynamic dns via tsig, srv records and dane for discovery and cert validation. this was before WASI so was planning on sandboxed js, today it would be wasm for sure, the platform handles auth(directly for http or via api), port selection (except standard ones) or http base routes and service registration(srv records) along with mandatory tls, then passes sockets to the "server" software, give some file system space(with api's) and sql(ite) via api's and that is most of what you need to build a platform that will turn a phone into a server for a single person.

had some interesting ideas for built in extras like coral cache type thing for cdn, distributed allow/block list. the coolest might have been evergreen software installs via webdav bind.

the *only* thing missing from standards was START/STOP http verbs.

I would love to see this exist in the world, the design is flexible enough to run on an old phone or as a massive 100k user setup for a large company (I mean imagine the horrors if sharepoint could do this). I am not sure if I will ever build it, if no one else does I might try
