Got a KPop Demon Hunters earworm this morning, and pondering how many stories are about people self-actualizing despite years of cultural abuse reinforced by how we do schooling.
It's almost like it's the aim of that process or something.
@futurebird I went to school in the '70s and early '80s through 7th grade in an isolated Waldorf community, it's only in the past decade and a half (maybe less) that I've come to see that as a deeply abusive weird aberration rather than a privilege.
Makes me more aware of ways that we've normalized awful.
As a child, you might have thought of the person or people who raised you as "strict" or "unfair"—or perhaps you thought they were distant or unreliable. But as you get older, you might reevaluate how you saw them as a child.

We often frame the damage LLMs do to open source as side effects, but realistically, this is Claude operating precisely as intended… by the vendor. The aim is to convert the value created by other devs into profits for the AI company. It does so by automating the process of finding existing code, stripping it of authorship, matching it to the prompted task, and redeploying it for the company's customer. That, whether they realize it or not, is what the customer is paying the AI company to do.

The point is... that site helped me so much. And I never said anything. They never knew. They must've worked so hard. And everything they built is gone.

One of the projects I contribute to is headed away from what I want to see in it, and I'm considering a fork or just a rewrite. Building Mac and Windows releases just feels like an expensive PITA, though.
Been seeing some... well, pearl-clutching is the kindest way to put it, over people bringing mock guillotines outside community meetings. "We mustn't condone VIOLENCE, after all!"

Re LLM fatigue: a contributing factor is when I'm stumbling over regressions in features and unnecessary merge conflicts because others are using them in a common code base.
My day job basically requires me to use LLMs (or, it is strongly encouraged) on the software that I develop. Now I understand why LLM fatigue and LLM burn-out happens. It is because you constantly have to babysit the LLM to keep it from screwing things up.
Babysitting is exhausting work. At one time in my life, as a 20-something-year-old, I was responsible for a group of 30 kids age 5 to 12. Every day I went home so drained that I could barely stay awake long enough to have dinner. I know from experience that school teachers perform some of the most labor-intensive work in the modern world.
It is what they call “emotional labor.” When other people are unable (as with kids) or unwilling (as with a lazy roommate) to live or play or work with you as a cooperative peer or team member, you essentially have to spend mental energy keeping an eye on them and making sure they aren’t doing something that is disruptive. That mental energy is a real energy cost, it really does consume calories and make you feel tired.
The worst part about it is that the LLM never really “learns.” Kids can learn to work and play with you. Lazy roommates can learn to live with you. But an LLM never really learns, and it keeps making the same mistakes over and over again. People who work with LLMs often end up keeping a directory of scripts they can deploy with a quick copy-paste so they can quickly re-explain something to an LLM. So the fatigue of watching over it and making sure the LLM doesn’t do something wrong is a constant emotional pressure, and it never gets better with age.

I regret to inform everyone that my copy of QBittorrent escaped its sandbox last night and downloaded a whole bunch of content owned by major corporations, and then my copy of Jellyfin broke containment and added those unfortunately-downloaded media files to its various libraries. I'm conducting an internal investigation to figure out how this happened, which will involve consuming these media files until the answers become apparent. @Urban_Hermit as an adult, I enjoyed going to see the exhibits, crafts that people were doing.
But... some years ago we were volunteering with formerly homeless families, among other things helping kids do projects. We suggested exhibiting these projects at the fair, and got blank stares from the parents.
Finally, one of them took us aside and said "I'm a meth addict, in recovery. The fair is my people. If I go there, I *will* relapse."
