The coins have no intrinsic value - their value is entirely in what they can be sold for, and nothing else - yet the systems that make them work require massive amounts of electricity, capex and opex, which must obviously be paid for somehow. Mining drains money from the system yet is necessary to sustain it. It will eventually collapse.

If the tax of doing business is less than the cost of the produced externalities, it’s a de facto subsidy.
