The best time to find slime molds is in the summer after heavy rain. Well, that’s exactly what we have had at the house… or should I say, ON the house??
Slime molds have 2 stages: plasmodial and fruiting. In the first, they are capable of movement. They can climb things. In the second, they can have very cool shaped bodies as they prepare to release their spores.
This one climbed the wooden siding of my house. 😳

When we arrived, it'd gotten dark. One person was standing outside looking at the clear sky. "There's Orion," he said.
I looked up. But I'm partially sighted, legally blind. I'm used to seeing a few bright spots at most.
This time, I could see Orion. And the Little Dipper. I started crying.
I didn't want to stop looking and go in.
Turns out this place was near a Dark Sky Area.
Massive gratitude to Michael for donating this grandfather clock, and restoring it to its former glory. This new (to us) clock resembles one described in The Amateur Poacher (1879).

I used to head up north to the top end every winter and get a dose of bush and sky. So much light from the stars, and all the different colours. Then you'd hear stories about Indigenous folks explaining why one star was a different colour to the others.
For thousands of years humans have read the sky at night in such amazing detail, and today we can barely even remember to look up.
@sundogplanets I remember, as a child, lying down on the ground at night, looking up and it changing my perception of gravity. The sensation stopped being looking "up" and became looking out. Felt like you could fall into the sky forever.
Even during daytime I can still get that sensation a bit if I lie like that. Once you've felt it, it stays with you. Feels important that people still get to have that.
Where is the best, most incredible, most perspective-shattering night sky that you've ever seen?
For me, it was the Tekapo dark sky reserve in New Zealand a few months ago (I got up at 1am both nights I was there specifically so I could get some mostly satellite-free skies to enjoy).
Second place: Mojave desert many years ago (before megaconstellations) or winter skies about an hour outside Regina, when the nights are long and there are no sunlit satellites due to geometry.
The world would be a much better place if everyone had easy access to infinity's doorstep, to realize how small we are, how unique and fragile our pale blue dot is.
You don't need a trip on a billionaire's rocket to get the "overview effect." You can do it by finding dark sky access, which is becoming harder and harder to get, partially due to billionaires' rockets.

Die „man darf ja nichts mehr sagen“-Partei will #Demokrat*innen den Mund verbieten.
Es fing an mit der Aufforderung, demokratische #Lehrer*innen im Internet zu denunzieren. Was folgte, waren #Dienstaufsichtsbeschwerden und öffentlicher #Pranger in einschlägigen Foren und Medien.
Jetzt also Teil 2.
Nun sollen demokratische #Richter*innen eingeschüchtert werden. Dafür wurden Namens-Listen in einer rechtsextremen Postille veröffentlicht mit ihrer Dienstbezeichnung und ihrem #Gericht. Das Ziel: wer sich für ein AxD-Verbot öffentlich ausgesprochen hat, soll mit Dienstaufsichtsbeschwerden überzogen werden. Denn angeblich sei dies ein Verstoß gegen das #Mäßigungsgebot.
Das ist inhaltlich Quatsch. Auch Richter*innen sind Bürger*innen mit allen demokratischen Rechten, zu denen die #Meinungsfreiheit und das Recht auf politische Betätigung zählen. Und dass es sehr gute Gründe gibt, die AxD für rechtsextrem zu halten, bestätigen etliche Gutachten von #Verfassungsschutz und #NGOs (ja, genau: die schlimmen NGOs) – nicht weniger das Verhalten und die Äußerungen etlicher, auch führender Parteimitglieder.
Daher ist es das gute demokratische Recht auch von Richter*innen, genau das #Prüfverfahren einzufordern, das unsere Verfassung in Art. 21 GG vorsieht: den amtlichen Test auf #Verfassungsfeindlichkeit durch das #Bundesverfassungsgericht.
Dort sitzen übrigens die einzigen 16 Richter*innen, die sich tatsächlich derzeit nicht zur Verfassungsfeindlichkeit der AxD äußern sollten. Denn nur sie könnten wirklich mit der Frage richterlich befasst werden.
