I noticed my Purple Air sensor went off the air about a month ago. I just went up to the roof to check on it today and the power supply was completely missing. It appears to have become part of a bird’s nest in a nearby tree. New power supply ordered. I would send the bill to the thieving birds, but they have childcare expenses to worry about now.

Brief storm in DC has lowered the outdoor AQI here significantly, now merely "unhealthy" (which is a big improvement).

According to Douglas Adams, "Belgium" is a very dirty word in much of the Galaxy. It's not in most versions of the books, but it is in the radio play (because you can't say "fuck" on air, so they just said "Belgium" instead).

One of the problems with the current AI mania is that products now eagerly claim to use “AI” whenever they can. But you have no way to tell whether this means it incorporates a few benign heuristics that might make it work a bit better or that it’s programmed to quietly learn as much as it can about you so that when the time comes, it can more efficiently harvest your organs.

Only a few (now one fewer) longwave broadcasters remain. Longwave, which is below the Mediumwave/AM band, has some interesting properties. It’s mostly regional/groundwave (like AM), but under some conditions can travel across oceans and hemispheres. I would occasionally receive the (now shuttered) BBC longwave broadcasts here in DC, but more often (especially in winter) get the North African longwave broadcasters (Algeria and Morocco).

Everything else aside, if the CEO of a major company (but still a tiny fraction of the size of the US government) was visibly spending half his time fretting about refurbishing the fountain in front of corporate headquarters, the stock would tank and the board would fire them.

When you generate signs with older AI image generator models like Stable Diffusion 1.5, the text is usually complete gibberish, often with glyphs that only vaguely look like something that might be letters from the Latin and/or Greek and/or Cyrillic alphabet, but not quite.

The idea is to generate signs with such an image generator and hang them in the real world. When people take photos in places where those signs hang, you can later claim the photos are fake, especially since even recent image generators still sometimes produce weird pseudo-text in the smaller background details.

By putting weird broken image slop onto real world surfaces, we can make the world look just as broken and fucked up as it actually is, below the surface. And we might even gain plausible deniability for real actual photos.

Latest outrageous use of the DoJ as the president's personal harassment weapon: E. Jean Carroll is being criminally investigated for perjury after her (successful) civil case against Trump.

The perjury theory seems to be quite weak; she corrected the deposition statement in question before trial, and the judge in the case had ruled it wasn't relevant to her credibility. But even if she beats the rap, she's in for a ride. Hopefully another no bill with the grand jury.
