You notice most of my tips are about packaging? Well, the food may be great, but if it doesn't survive the journey to you, it really doesn't matter how good it was when I picked it up!
Also the smaller the business the more your order means to them, it's just a numbers game. McDonald's doesn't care if your order arrives cold, late, and in a soaked through bag. A little local café, you bet they'd care!
5. Does the place you're ordering from have parking? Check! If it doesn't, how are drivers going to pick up your order? You'll be waiting for a bicycle courier. If it's far away, expect to wait hours for someone willing to bike it out to you, or a driver desperate enough to risk a parking ticket.
6. The amount you pay for delivery has little to no bearing on how much we're paid for that delivery. It's mostly a function of how low they think they can go to get us to press the magic accept button.
Tips from a delivery driver:
1. Small local cafés are awesome. Good value and great service. They often have the best packaging.
2. Burger King has specific delivery packaging and is a good option.
3. Every driver hates grocery orders but we'll do them if you tip well. Which nobody does. So expect long wait times.
4. Don't order drinks from McDonald's, they don't have delivery packaging so half the time they've already spilt in the bag before I even leave the restaurant. Now add the car ride.
I'm just getting from A to B, and I'm not even sure I wanted to go to B in the first place. I think I might just stay at A next time.
