Ugh. I just got palm-sweaty excited by the thought of getting sound working in my seL4/Idris OS. I think secretly I just want to make bleeps and bloops.

I think I found a bug in Idris 2's "refc" backend on 32-bit platforms. It is late, so tomorrow I will investigate. It's not a subtle bug, so I'm still unsure if I've got the right idea or if I'm just exhausted.

I tripped over this bug, if I understand correctly what's going on, immediately after getting "Hello World" in Idris atop the seL4 kernel. I'd never worked with seL4 or Idris 2 before. Learning curve was steeeeep.

Unfollowed someone just now because, while I appreciate hearing their perspective, they were posting AI generated answers this morning. They're someone who had muted me over an earlier disagreement, or else I might've said something about it to them instead.

Forgot that I'm going to have to compile an Idris runtime as part of the build process rather than relying on the one on my host system. Been fighting CMake most of the day as well. Got a C program linking with GMP and running under seL4 yesterday, but I don't think I'm going to manage the same feat with Idris today.

Mostly because I just noticed the adacore/spark2014 repository has an earnest AGENTS.md, while Idris has a no-LLM policy.

Hmm. Maybe I should be learning Idris 2 instead of Ada.

Right, so I guess I'm teaching myself Ada now.

Maybe these conversations are being had somewhere in the mainstream discourse, but I haven't seen it.

I keep hearing snatches of the discourse around "prediction markets," and it boggles my mind how nobody seems to have grasped the obvious. These are bounties, not bets, and the leaking of information via "insider trading" (or the actualization of certain events; a market that allows bets on dates of death for certain people *is* an assassination market) is the whole reason for their existence.

If in some dystopian future you *must* use the deskilling machine, you'll be able to pick it up in very little time and lie to your employer about how long you've been using it. (Don't feel bad, they deserve it.)

You will never get "left behind" by not learning a "skill" aimed squarely at deskilling.

Just imagine if all that had been kept within an anticapitalist economy.

"I learned that the Danish resistance didn’t arrive all at once. Like what we are witnessing now in the United States, it unfolded gradually—slow, then fast, then full tilt—driven by flash points that demanded escalation and deepened solidarity."

"Ethics, as mobilized by corporates and their fellow travelers, is not only a matter of fine sounding statements but a method of depoliticizing and individualizing problems that should really be a matter of collective political concern."

Seems like oftentimes the first thing folks with strong mathematic skills and underdeveloped "humanities" skills do upon encountering a complex or ambiguous situation is to build a clean, well-defined model of their understanding, climb into it, and then lose sight of its fundamental insufficiency.

IDK, just thinking out loud about how often I see clever engineers espousing poorly-reasoned ideologies, and how often it seems to be the "the humanities are worthless" crowd doing it.

Don't cross the picket line today.

Free killer idea: a charging network with no shitty, half broken app. Just scan your credit card and get charging.

Every time I put my bins out for pickup, I remember the time my housemates called the cops on someone who was going through our recycling for cans. I'd just told him we didn't mind so long as he didn't leave a big mess. Still wish I'd gotten a chance to tell him I'd had nothing to do with it.

@aral Hey, what was that (federated?) streaming platform you were using to host streams a while ago? I've done some searching but can't seem to find it again.

I'm new to tilde.town and new to tiny.tilde.website. I've been kicking it at gemini://station.martinrue.com and gemini://lyk.so for about a year now, but I thought I might give this World Wide Web thing a try. 😸

I like smol tech, solarpunk, cooking, and programming. I'm interested in degrowth and generally trying to buttress the digital commons.
