"All Systems Operational" says Github status, as I'm looking at Unicorns and pages that don't load. But it's fine, I'm only trying to push out a product release for an important customer.

Back on my Mac Mini at home after EuroRust, and the reboot means I've picked up the new @FirefoxOfficial which means I have the horrendous new Container Tab styling and ARGH MY EYES, MAKE IT STOP.

At work I went back to Firefox ESR, but that forces me to make a whole new profile.

I always seem to look angry when I present.

Feel free to have a caption competition in the replies.

This was so much fun. I can’t wait for the video to be released.

The term "single use software" currently lives rent free in my head.

People use LLMs to create software specific for their needs. But neither can other people use it (hardcoded variables, no rights management, too specific), nor do they use it again (too specific, easier to produce a new one).

Single use software is not maintained. Nobody understands it or has an interest in keeping it working.

The creation of single use software feels cheap, but isn't. It takes time to create the software, it needs infrastructure and power. The time is experienced as short compared to how long it takes to create maintainable and reusable software. But once you take into account how many people benefit from reusable software, the single use software takes way more time to create than what it saves. The infrastructure and power costs are hidden because the data center isn't visible. The costs are subsidized by venture capital.

Like other single use items, single use software brings risks of unforeseen consequences. From data loss or leaks to issues for maintainers of reusable software (eg. verbal abuse, less motivation and lost income).

As an example of single use software is a German LinkedIn post of a person who slopcoded a HEMS (home energy management system). It took them more than a week. While open source projects like https://evcc.io/ already provide the same functionality. They could have used it for free or paid 100€ and got support for some additional devices. But they decided that they know better how it should work and now have a single use software. If it breaks there is nobody they can ask. There won't be updates and no community to discuss and develop new features. No organization will ever be interested in officially supporting it. And even if it works, it only benefits that one person.

(This doesn't mean people shouldn't build things that only they use. But they should enjoy doing so.)

Super busy day at High Integrity Systems Conference today at the NEC in Birmingham. Off to Eurorust in Barcelona tomorrow.

I strongly recommend reading @dansinker's Open Letter To The People Writing Lengthy Posts About 'Why I'm Going Back to Twitter' — it won't take much of your time.

The YouTube app is playing one video whilst showing me the description and comments for the previous one.

How do you screw something up this badly?

(Do not tell me, we all know)

My AlphaPC now has an AHA-2940UW SCSI card, a Matrox Millennium, and a Sound Blaster AWE64.

Plus an Allied Telesyn NIC that is one of the vanishingly few on the official HCL list for Alpha NT.

I'm bringing it to Retro Computer Festival to play Space Cadet Pinball.

The problem is the Alpha 21164 at 533 MHz is so damn fast that the game is basically unplayable.

Good luck! Highest score on the day wins some sort of meagre prize.

Aha! (Boom boom)

It was in the microcontroller box. Along with my other AHA-2940UW ??!

I’ve lost my Adaptec AHA-2940UW host bus adapter. I can find 26 other AGP/PCI cards but not that one.

How do you all manage your PCI card collection??!

How do I write CFI directives for an Arm interrupt assembly routine that rounds the stack pointer down to a multiple of 8?

Raspberry Pi OS/Desktop available 64-bit PCs/Intel Macs

Has anyone here actually tried the Macintosh HAL for Windows NT?

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@thejpster/117382776223831206

64-bit Windows NT was first developed on 64-bit Alpha using the spare workstations left over after the 32-bit Alpha port of Windows 2000 was cancelled. The 64 bit Alpha port was never intended to be released but it saved them waiting for Itanium hardware (for the first public 64-bit NT port). NT was very portable so the hard part was making it 64 bit clean and the Alpha was fine for that.

Gosh they must have been disappointed when the Itaniums finally turned up.

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@thejpster/117382774804182149

Windows NT was first developed on the Intel i860 (code name NTen, which some say inspired the name for Windows on this platform). I believe the MIPS port was second and x86 was third. It was also ported to PowerPC and Alpha.
