Regardless of memory, the most common guts used by the boxes in the "under $50" price bracket are one of the following:

- Allwinner H618 (or H313)
- Rockchip RK3528 (or RK3506g2)
- Amlogic S905 (many variants)

What you will usually find is these boxes lack mainline Linux Kernel support due to proprietary drivers, though if you can live without hardware video decoding you can often get a 6.x kernel. That said, the Allwinner H618 stands out with full 7.x mainline support thanks to its predecessor the H616 (an older variation with a smaller cache).

BIG CAVEAT: While some of the chips do support gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0, you will unfortunately sometimes find that the gigabit PHY was omitted (i.e. you get 100 MbE instead), or no USB 3.0 port was exposed. 😓

I was genuinely disappointed to learn there really aren't any (IMHO) super-affordable computers anymore.

My working theory was that you could repurpose one of those "landfill" mass produced Chinese Android TV boxes as Linux PCs. After all, many of these are listed as having a whopping 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage! Alas, none of the chipsets used support more than 4GB of RAM, and often use modded Android firmware that lies about the available memory. 😵‍💫

Weird to think I successfully met my goal (setup headscale and connect a device), but the project is a failure due to the fine print. 🥲

On the upside this means I do understand the pieces better, but I need to rethink how it should work, including if Tailscale/Headscale really is the best tool for orchestrating what I want. 🤔

Like "plan B" might be to run Headscale on a VPS, though I was hoping to avoid yet another subscription. 😓

Boo!

Good news: headscale and cloudflare tunnels work great! 🎉

Bad news: just not together. 🤷

It seems tailscale relies on some connection upgrading stuff for login/activation, something that Cloudflare strips from the connection.

Ah well. 🤷

OK, now that "popular internet event" has been kicked off, I can get back to today's project. ☺️

The project: Setting up Tailscale (Headscale).

My goal: I want a nicer way of managing all the many computers I use and how they connect, from servers to single board computers. Specifically I'd like to create private "project networks" that just work regardless of their location (LAN or WAN).

My hope: I haven't seriously used Tailscale before, but I'm hoping it's capable enough that I can easily provision any random computer and decide it now has a magical private network connection to whatever bundle of other computers I decide to connect it to.

I also don't want to spend money, so I spun up Armbian on an Orange Pi, and I installed the Headscale server software. Other machines will connect to it via a Cloudflare Tunnel, allowing me to completely disregard port forwarding and other annoying firewall setup.

I hate that I've begun looking into how orchestrating agents works, because I simply can't afford to get another "no" from my job applications for my "anti-AI" stance.

TWO FUCKING YEARS OF THIS JOB HUNT SHIT SHOW. 🥲

Was trying out some new colors to get a feel for what I like. Ring finger is from my previous mani (which I love 🩵), and middle is from a different polish that I see is barely distinguishable. I want to be comfortable wearing bright+vibrant colors, but my hunch is that I have a preference for muted tones, which thus far seems to be true. Something about reds and pinks doesn't feel like me, but there may be something in peach or orange that does work. I think this lighter purple works better than many I've tried, and the green has potential. My thumb has what's supposed to be a lilac, which I read a neutral gray in the 2nd photo (which I quite like), but I'd rather it read grayer in the first photo.

Nail fun. ☺️💅

They should have stopped at "A".

Excitedly sent off a resume for a remote gig, but TBD if my flavor of autism wins this autistic role. 🤷

YOU USED TO BE ABLE TO FIND INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET. i sound insane right now because the internet is a store but it used to be a library

Why does it feel like I need a personal AI Agent to get a job these days?

Make your mark.
