Highly recommend Gil Durán's book, "The Nerd Reich". It's only a difficult read in the sense that the content matter is not pleasant.
Knowing about the business and people behind the technology that has been foisted upon many these days, I find it very hard to justify any use of it with arguments of utility.

As a software developer of nearly 20 years after getting a PhD in computer science with the original intention of going into academia, Moshe's response here basically puts the nail in the coffin for me ever supporting the ACM while in its current guise.
I was a member for a while after defending and I've kept an eye on the organization in so much as time allows. They have consistently disappointed me.
If they ever stop shilling industry trends maybe I'll pay attention again. (And yes, they've always been a bit of an industry shill because the whole field of computing is deeply entwined with business, but still, at least pretend like you're not a shill.)
