Is it OK to use walled garden social media to promote the Fediverse?

As an American, this feels like an important topic to me. If we are experiencing an erosion on US democracy, I would like to see a program in place to reduce that threat.

Thanks to everyone who responded to the poll and commented.

Does the Democratic Party have a plan for putting the era of far-right populism behind us?

OK, who are the experts on #DistributedSystems on the #Fediverse? There is a new #FEP for implementing a scalar #LogicalClock in #ActivityPub, #FEP4f18.

I'm especially interested in mitigations for Byzantine faults in the system; right now, it's kind of hand-wavy based on value and trust heuristics:

Also, in an earlier version of this post, I said that the generation before the Baby Boomers, sometimes called the Silent Generation, is dead. That wasn't strictly true; about 10% of that generation worldwide is still alive. It also wasn't very thoughtful to write off so many real people as a rounding error. There are some indignant responses to my original post, which I have changed to "mostly gone". I'm sorry for what I said.

If you were born before 1945, hi! 👋🏼 Nice to see you on the Fediverse. I'm glad you're here.

What day is it?

Sorry if I'm being mean; I'm in my Mean Time, Between Failures. I'll probably fail at something soon and be nice again after.

The stereotype that grandmas and grandpas, much less parents and aunts and uncles, are inexperienced with technology is obsolete and meaningless. Enough already.

Personal computers were introduced around 1975 and were widespread in offices by 1985. The Internet was widely available by 1995.

Baby Boomers in their 70s and 80s today used networked PCs 40 years ago.

The generation before them, who grew up and became adults without connected computers in their lives, is mostly gone. (RIP ☝🏼)

Hey, all. Very interesting. So, I've mentioned this a few times in the comments, but I've done a survey of about 85,000 servers that have been seen by existing live servers. Of those servers, about 32% reply successfully to a Nodeinfo request. Nodeinfo is a per-server statistics endpoint.

The #Forkiverse is shutting down.

Of all the ActivityPub servers that have ever been publicly available, how many do you think are still up today?

I tried to include dine-in, take-out and delivery in this question, but feel free to answer as you'd like. The stakes are low.
