fundamentally i want to live in richard scarry's busytown

i mean, im a little biased bc i think all zines are cool

becky chambers made a cool zine about AI: https://www.otherscribbles.com/aizine

its part of why i wrote this— i feel like a lot of it is like dealing with grief. https://mastodon.social/@emaytch/117243186284387541

so it’s kind of like seeing ppl go “oh my god, what do we do?” and i’m just shrugging like that’s what i’ve been trying to figure out for almost twenty years

for a while tech was kind of like the "escape hatch" for people who couldn't or wouldn't fit in at other corporations and now it's sort of like a flaming timber fell on the escape hatch while people were still lining up to get in

i see so many ppl in tech flailing, both here and in my personal life, and i wish i had better advice for them bc it just feels like that industry has finally reached the point every other industry i've been in has gone through

honestly, one thing about genAI and slop that i’m thankful for is that it really forced to me reevaluate what i value about art and why. bc if the promise is “endless content that’s exactly what you want” is so unappealing to me, i had to think about why that sounded so appealing— and whether the way i was consuming content actually helped that

people complain about rounded corners in modern ui design. but have you considered how much safer this is making the internet for children??

honestly at this point writing your password down in a notebook or hidden on your desk might be more secure than keeping it online in some fashion. i mean what're the odds of you getting burglarized vs. someone just hacking the system you use

i bet this doesn't even accurately measure two weeks https://timex.com/products/timex-x-fortnite-weekender-37mm-fabric-strap-watch-tw2y46400

note: i DO NOT want a smartwatch and honestly i'm not super into digital watches in general but i'm not totally against those at least

anybody got wristwatches they like? can't find mine so i'm thinking of getting another one, but i can't just buy the same one since what if i find the old one

i am, honestly, a little genuinely curious about the social and psychological forces that coincided to make us go from "computers don't need to count dates over 1999, that's crazy" to "computers can do no wrong ever, listen to all they have to say"

was looking at this port of "Alone Among the Stars" and thought of the idea of having a Game Boy while traveling filled with little journaling games and programs like this and i really like the concept. i mean i guess it's just a very limited computer but its more... fun i guess? https://donotrunwithpixels.itch.io/alone-among-the-stars

one of those 264-games-in-one bootleg carts but its filled with free homebrew game boy games

feeling like i was inoculated from LLM hype in part by listening to an AI researcher on the freakonomics podcast a decade and a half ago make a compelling case that Furbies are sentient life

please stop pointing out to me that everything i need the omelas child for is something i only started using in the past few years because we got an omelas child. it makes it very hard to ignore the omelas child

i mean, sure, i know the omelas child is bad, but it’s just so much time and effort to get away from an omelas system. and you know all the other services that use children treat them just as bad. good on you for walking away, though

the worst thing is when you find a program that does like. 80% of what you want. but the last 20% makes it not work for you. because then you know you'll never find the program that you actually want
