So it's likely I'm headed to the #AGU meeting in December, do I have any fediverse mutuals or acquaintances who are also attending?
I know it's a big meeting, and it's over Hannukah, so I'm probably only going to attend Monday/Tuesday for the sessions I'm involved with.
You know what stinks... going out of your way to buy a product directly from the manufacturer and paying 25% ($30) more for the product over what it would cost to buy from Amazon, only to have it show up in an Amazon package.
I get that letting Amazon handle logistics for your business might seem wise, but I'm pretty disappointed as a customer.
shana tovah, friends!
(with apologies to John Prine, whose lyrics are perpetually relevant)
Well, I came here to eat a lot of peaches and blow up my TV, and I'm all outta peaches.
There are some cheaper items that show up when I look for "3.5mm SMA adapter", but somehow I don't think these are good to 26.5 GHz.
Not sure what anyone is going to use this for. 🤷♂️
So I'd been looking for some RF test equipment to get involved in a little more homebrew, ideally on the VHF/UHF frequencies. I had a number of items on an eBay watch-list and then today had a seller offer half off on one that was already a decent price for a used HP frequency counter... and happened to go _well_ into microwave frequencies... so I sprung for it.
What I didn't account for is that the >500MHz port (overkill for me already) has a "3.5mm" connector and the adapters to things I already use (SMA or N) are almost half what I'm paying for the instrument!
I can't believe my Al escaped containment and is now going on a 35 city tour playing polka-infused parodies of 80s and 90s pop songs on the accordion.
I've been asked to take on a new role at work that is much more firmly in the software development world, so perhaps appropriate that these books showed up in the mail over the weekend.
Very much looking forward to reading these!
The best thing about fediverse is that someone starts a post with "here's another great bug" and it could be two very different subjects that I am going to enjoy.

Yeah, 100% this.
I can't believe no one calls them...
chicken pretenders.
If you write #rstats code and deal with daily data stored at the end of period, I'd love to know how you avoid off-by-one errors in your analysis.
If I bring everything in with the correct timestamps and it puts it at the end of the day, but plotting and analysis libraries all treat that as the start of the next day. For example, I want to convert daily to monthly totals, and then my last-day-of-the-month value shows up in the next month.
Same question, but for #hydrology #meteorology and related fields only:
Did you know that nachos are* kosher for pesach?
Did you know that you can just eat a plate of nachos for dinner?
Now you do.

It seems from my feed this morning that dog people have found the fediverse. Quick, we need more #Caturday posts!
Me: "Hey I realized you haven't had an afternoon snack yet, let's get you a snack."
Kid: "No! I don't want one."
"Really?"
"No! I DON'T WANT A SNACK!"
"Well how about I bring you a slice of fresh mozzarella?"
"Of course I do, I love fresh mozzarella! Yum! (But it's not a snack!)"
"Okay, and how about some apple slices?"
"Yes please!"

Funny that this reply seems to be getting several favs today, as this morning I authorized a 1.1 release version of $WORK_PROJECT after nearly a decade* since the 1.0 release.
(*two team leads ago and a major change to the build & testing processes).
Either you all are taunting me, or it's a strange coincidence.
(To be fair, this is less of a waterfall release and more just heavy dependence on beta testing by the field to make us confident enough to officially bump the minor version.)

This exact text is on an image hanging near my desk, and I first saw circulating in Jewish lefty circles on Twitter back in 2017. I don't know the original artist who did that version. It's something I keep coming back to again and again over the last decade.
The second half ("You are not obligated...") is from Pirkei Avot, a book of jewish ethics, and something I've been meaning to explore more deeply.
Glad to see Skelator also finds this inspirational. 😂
Also kudos to #Lego for inventing a connector that can be connected about 16 different ways on one try and still work. The USBIF folks should really look into this technology.
(Granted, polarity doesn't matter for any of these motors or sensors, but quite impressive.)
