At the truck stop checking out the cup holder extensions that allow a regular cup holder to hold a Big Gulp

@jpmens I will die on this hill. I have a monitor the size of Nebraska, I have space for borders and visible usable scroll bars, and I absolutely do not care about the stupid aesthetics of rounded corners if it means I can't resize windows using the well-thought-out obvious visual controls that were standardized over 3 decades ago.

I wish UI designers demonstrated they know anything about human factors and usability, at the bare minimum can display the level of understanding common in the 70s and 80s. What I see are careless thoughtless graphic designers raised on CSS and mobile app design and Having Opinions.

This corrosion of competence has been going on for decades, at least by the time "skeuomorphism" entered the lexicon. This isn't a reflexive "old ways are best" mentality, it's knowing that techniques like THERP exist https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technique_for_human_error-rate_prediction and that HRA as an engineering discipline has a long history that should be at least understood before being discarded.

Modern systems have so much more basic capability (speed, resolution, space) yet are somehow far less usable than those of 2-3 decades ago.

Early in a relationship you should ask yourself, “does this person help me grow spiritually? Am I a better human being for knowing them?”

If the answer is no, fuck them one last time then ghost them

I have never read or watched Love in the Time of Cholera, but I imagine it goes something like this:

Person 1: Letʼs make love

Person 2: Can't, gotta poop some more

Cultural exchange program date:

Introduced Y to the Commodore 64, BASIC coding (she's a professional tech worker but slightly too young to have grown up with the glory of C64s) and Maniac Mansion (she'd been coding BASIC on the C64 for two hours before I showed her MM, and she gasped audibly watching the intro - "HOW THE FUCK DID THEY DO THAT?")

In exchange? She began teaching me how to pick locks. Felt a very @alice kind of trade, really.

Product idea: caps lock key with Brian Blessed’s face on it

Which, if any, of the BSDs have taken a hard line against including LLM-generated code?

Hi everyone. I think it's my first time on Mastodon. I've been reselling VPSs (Vultr, DigitalOcean) for cryptocurrency for years and decided to do things the hard way and make my own host using OpenBSD's VMM. Thus, Slow Servers was born.

If you'd like to check it out:

There is only one public execution I would watch.

So, I recently got nerd-sniped into making my own Linux distribution - focused on declarative security constraints - inspired by #OpenBSD, #NixOS, #Wolfi, #Alpine, and #CrOS - as well as processes like #SOC2. The idea is: if you don't declare the behavior up front, it won't work - including malware and (most) kernel exploits. VM-focused.

I've been talking about the idea for years, but was waiting on someone else to build it.

Just curious - what gripes do you have with Linux distro's today?

WHAT a drama queen! Hank showed up and found his cat food bowl full of walnuts for the crows and he died on the spot 😾

Oh, me? Not much, just getting pumped about Triangle Computing. It's almost ready to break through into the mainstream.

a couple of weeks ago, i got one of those noise machines that makes rolling thunderstorm sounds. i started it on the lowest setting and turned it up by one notch each evening when i fed the dogs. there is now a constant loud thunderstorm in the room where they spend a lot of time. i'm interested to see if it helps during a _real_ thunderstorm. right now, the dogs don't react to it at all.

i will say that none of the dogs reacted when there was thunder on the tv the other night.

Correction:
It was brought to my attn that the attribution to Sir David is likely apocryphal, originating among Sir David fan groups. He never experienced a sense of abandonment (not even during WWII), but one could imagine 100yo Sir David would be a supporter of this practice if he were ever made aware of it.

It is, however, a recommendation by many animal behaviorists:.
