I woke up at 6… on a Saturday… on my own… with no alarm… Like an old lady. I am annoyed. I take pride in my ability to sleep until at least 10 on weekends. This better not become a thing. sleeping is my favorite part of the day.
I renamed my toilet Jim instead of John.. people are really impressed when I tell them I go to the Jim every morning.
Just a few random things before I crash. I got Covid, flu and shingles jabs today. I was surprised they let me do all 3 vaccines at the same time but it works for me so I went with it. I picked up my favorite boots from the repair shop and can't wait to wear them again. I’m going to the OKC Philharmonic tomorrow night, so I will get my first chance to wear them again very soon. Yay! The heel broke about a year ago and I couldn't let them go. They're cute af and they're nice boots with plenty of wear in them. I'm glad I found someone to fix them. They are all polished up and good as new and it only cost me $27. Score! I also went to the hardware store and got some heavy duty stainless steel trashcans with locking lids to hopefully keep critters out of my chicken feed. There was an incident. You don’t wanna know. I also got a haircut and had a great dinner with my friend who helped me with all my tasks today. Good stuff. I'm wiped out now. Maybe all the shots have something to do with it or maybe it's just been a long week. Either way, I'm going to bed early tonight. You kids behave and keep it down. Lol.
World Sight Day is October 8. Preventing preventable blindness matters, full stop. But not all blindness is preventable. I've been blind since birth; no screening changes that. So while we fund eye care, fund the other stuff too: access, training, employment, the things that make blind lives good right now. Prevention and equality aren't competing causes.
Great. Thanks for the help.
Do you know what really grinds my gears? When somebody responds to a perfectly valid accessibility issue with, “Do you have any family member or friend that can help you?”
Why is that any of your business? And for the record, no, I don’t have someone here, so actually help me with a solution.
In this case I’ve tried to educate rather than just get angry, but honestly, it’s exhausting.
Hey #Blind hive mind. Does Olymbpus still make digital recorders with tts menus and if so, anyone know model numbers?
I guess my neighbors got a new dog. Or maybe they're dog-sitting. Actually, it sounds like it might be 2 dogs. It or they are very yappy. I like dogs but this is annoying. I hope it's temporary or they don't leave it or them out all the time. Yeah, it's definitely 2 dogs with their people out in the yard scolding them constantly. Not sure if I'm more annoyed by the barking or the shouty humans. ALSO, I'm grumpy today. I should go eat something. It would probably help.
This day is dragging by. Bleh. Wish I could take a nap.
Version 1.2.4 was just released to the App Store of #Earshot
Here’s what’s new:
Add audio files from Files to the new Personal Audio section in Library. Earshot saves your place and remembers a playback speed for each file. This update also expands Siri and Shortcuts playback actions, lets you share episode links, adds podcast search and sorting options, and offers an optional Home Screen badge for downloaded unheard episodes. Launch, Library, Queue, and folder picker responsiveness have improved. Personal Audio import and reset cleanup are more reliable.
Get the app for free at the following link:

Thanks for everyone’s support.
Mortuary technician here. Often take a nap at work by lying on a gurney and covering myself with a sheet. Haven't been accidentally autopsied yet, but have scared the newbie half to death when I started snoring
I am not just another balding, overweight white guy wearing the same eyeglasses as the next balding, overweight white guy. That’s because I'm bald on top, not balding. And I’m overweight because my wife is an excellent cook and my extra pounds are just a physical manifestation of her love.
I am not the guy who drives like an idiot. I drive like your Grandma now. Most of the time. I drove like an idiot 40 years ago. Driving is overrated.
I am not the guy whose lawn looks better than yours, whose car is newer, who hosts the block party and the talks shit about everyone else on the block to his closest buddies. That’s because I hate mowing the lawn, am happy with my 10-year old car, and you’d never catch me at a block party. I like my neighbors and say hi, and bring a select few a fresh-baked nut roll at Christmastime, and I’d rather hang with my family.
I am definitely not the smartest guy in the room, nor do I ever want to be. I know that I don’t always know. I have some brains, but it took me a long time to develop any street smarts. I did well across the board but could never choose one path. I love to do many things.
Holy cow, I still have 3800+ characters?!
I think that’s enough of an intro for now. But I’ll close with these thoughts:
Mean people suck. Love and joy are everything.
Thanks for reading this far. Can’t wait to see the world through your eyes.
Someone asked me the other day if #accessibility has been getting better over the last years.
I feel that's a difficult question to answer. Relatively speaking, maybe, in some aspects, yes it has.
But if I'm brutally honest, better does by no means mean good.
Right now, I'd say accessibility as a whole can be described thusly:
People have, on a whole, felt largely ignored and essentially akin to a dog begging for scraps at the dinner table. Maybe every so often someone somewhere decides to do something, but in general, accessibility is ignored, deprioritized, devalued and at times derided by those who should often know better.
Accessibility is in a state where people would rather use a planet-destroying, ethically questionable slot machine to fix things, because the human slot machine of getting people to care has far worse odds and requires far more effort with often nothing to show for it.
And yet, that probably is still better than a decade ago.
I’m not trying to yuck anyone's yum, but I really hate the phrase "yuck anyone's yum."
I'm not antisocial, I'm pro-solitude
I have cracked the code with the issue of not being able to turn pages reading a Kindle book with my Dot Pad on iOS 27! I am absolutely over the moon here. I can hardly believe it! I have just figured out a workaround. The far right panning key simply didn't pan. Here's what I did: I went to the VoiceOver settings and then under Braille there is a little toggle that says turn pages while panning. We always tell people to turn that sucker on. I wonder what would happen if I turned it off! It works! Turning pages while panning is now off, which makes it work! Go figure! So, to my Dot Pad comrades, happy Kindle reading!
Woke up. Let the chickens out. Had breakfast. Took meds. Thinking about going back to bed because it's Sunday and I can do that. Sleeping is the best.
PSA to other blind people, rating a Deaf Uber driver 1 star with a safety violation because of a disability clash and because you are totally blind is a very ableist thing to do.
There's texting. There are ASL classes for the blind. I took one years ago at the school for the Deaf and the Blind I attended. I have Deaf friends teach me ASL via touch.
I know ASL is a visual language, but let's not be ableist because we are blind ourselves.
