A shame there aren't more abridged versions of Redwall books. It would be great fun.

So far, "Marlfox" can be summarized as, "I'm so-and-so, and I'm the main character, and we're headed to Redwall Abbey to warn them that Marlfoxes are wandering about, which everyone has inexplicably heard of and recognizes on sight!"

I fully expected this scene to run far shorter than it did, but all the same I adore the results.

Rien and Dhain are cute together as always they are, and his habitual palming of his mate's heft is rather endearing after the two share a kiss.

I also greatly enjoy the banter between Anja and Laika, particularly where it comes to Rien and Dhain's habit of attending breakfast naked (as they've only just finished bathing, most mornings), not that either are unwilling to join them, being close friends. Laika's increasing fascination over Dhain's endowments is equally humorous, since it gives her quite a bit to tease Rien with, just like Anja, who has often remarked on how nice he looks after pairing off.

I'll not go into exhaustive details of lundic reproductive anatomy, but let's just say the boys tend toward a certain 'fullness', as it were', after they spill themselves, so to speak, which explains the mutual interest.

Getting dressed in the loft whilst his mate strips their bed after breakfast and some lovemaking, Rien invites Dhain to come with them. His mate declines, still wishing to tidy, and thus Rien joins Laika and Anja alone. The three talk as they wander the woodlands a time, and certain matters are eventually raised when Laika's innocent aside leaves her mate uneasy.

This may have more to do with comorbidity than autism unto itself, but I'm far from an expert on the subject.

I just find it strange how the 1980s-1990s saw a huge boom of literary publications within the fandom, many with well-developed characters and intricate plots, that now seem completely absent.

Money is one part, yes, but I wonder if interest in books and comics has waned (together with peoples' desire to create them).

Sometimes I wonder if the over-representation of Autism Spectrum Disorders in the furry fandom is why zines and long-form literature feel increasingly rare.

In related news, Marlfox was one of the books I remember most strongly from growing up.

Interestingly, it reintroduces Noonvale (supposed to be kept secret after the events of "Martin the Warrior"), and the Hidden Lake and its island (found by our first squirrel Redwall Warrior and Alma in "Salamandastron," I believe), though there was no sign of a castle then, just a "ghost badger" (Urthwyte) and his caretakers.

Oh, and apparently the entire tapestry gets stolen this time. Cluny the Scourge really gets shown up yet again, doesn't he?

Printing in the 80s was just so much classier.

As crazy as it may end up being, setting up my engine thing to use an Entity-Component System (ECS) -based approach might actually be more sane, particularly if I use multiple threads/fibers for assembling GPU data and command buffers.

The reasoning is simply that it means never having t walk the entire scene or worry about "virtual" nodes to compose stuff, but rather querying exactly what I need ("give me every instance of That Thing").

Which is really useful when I need to do things like assembling a buffer of 4x4 matrices to render thousands of identical objects in a single pass (which also requires knowing the number of instances and how many vertices to draw).

A fair bit of this scene ended up just popping into my head, but works rather well overall. Took me a few tries to get the opening feeling right, but things flowed rather nicely after that.

Definitely on the brief side, but that's because the majority of it is dialogue, as Aislin and Micha spend most of the time discussing recent events -- when Aislin isn't busy reflecting on things to bring the reader up to the present, that is -- but it flows together nicely. I'm rather pleased I was able to work in the bit about Ara, in both cases, since she didn't make it into the notes last night.

Still have to decide when (and if) they're going up to Kynuras and Sindhri Hold to visit, but that can be put off for a time. Probably until book 7.
