South Korea went from burying almost all its food waste to recycling almost all of it. In 1997, 95.4% went to landfill. Today about 95% is recycled, after a 2005 landfill ban, separate collection and pay-by-weight bins that cut Seoul’s daily food waste by nearly a quarter. The Korean Zero Waste Movement Network, a coalition of more than 180 groups, campaigned for four decades and is now an Earthshot Prize finalist.
