Discovered a new #FreeBSD #ports (or maybe #poudriere?) bug today: with DEFAULT_VERSIONS= ssl=openssl, the change of the default branch of OpenSSL from end-of-life 3.0 to 3.5 does not cause sudo to get rebuilt by `poudriere bulk`, leaving the existing package with a shared-library dependency on the obsolete libcrypto.so.12. If sudo is manually cleaned and rebuilt, it does pull in the correct libcrypto.so.17 but seems like there's a missing direct dependency that's pulled in transitively?

No, #Firefox, I did not need fucking *rounded corners* on my tabs. What a stupid fucking waste of effort when you could have been making a better browser.

By deliberately breaking the chromium Makefile I found that the following ports have a mysterious, irrelevant dependency on chromium:

postgresql16-server-16.15
py312-redis-8.1.0
git-2.55.0
py312-pip-23.3.2_4
subversion-1.14.5_1
bind-tools-9.20.29
bind920-9.20.29
emacs-nox-31.1_2,3
curl-8.22.0
graphviz-16.1.0
p5-GD-Graph-1.56
p5-GD-TextUtil-0.86_5
nfs-exporter-0.4.7_2
nrpe-4.1.3
super_mediator-1.6.0_3
yaf-2.13.0_1
py312-cloud-init-25.2_1
cleanfeed-20200402_1
p5-News-Article-1.27_4
gnupg-2.5.21

Can anyone suggest an efficient way to determine which port is dragging in this shit? Google is not being helpful. @_bapt_?

OK, today's package build, on the small (work) package set, something is dragging in not only chromium but an enormous pile of python crap and rust-nightly and node and Ghu only knows what else I'm about to learn about.

Anyone know who is establishing fake mastodon.social accounts with the vowels removed from existing users' names, and following those existing users' follows?

This (controlled flight into terrain) is an analogy I made before, on another network, I think during the first term, or perhaps in late 2024.

I have absolutely no expectation of ever using this, but has anyone written, in any language, a good float-to-vulgar-fraction converter? "Good" means "only uses traditional vulgar fractions of the sort represented as single sorts in typesetters' cases and in Unicode" and "falls back to decimal when the rational value would be a 'too far' from the original float".

The pension plan, AIUI, is overfunded relative to commitments and so the money they give to MITIMCo in this change might not actually be real money but just reclassification of existing excess pension earnings (that the Institute would otherwise be entitled to draw), so maybe that's how it saves money?

Puzzling announcement from MIT finance and HR today:
* they're eliminating the 5% employer match to 401(k) plans
* they're replacing it with a 3% fixed employer contribution
* they're putting 2.5% more into the traditional defined-contribution pension plan
* this is somehow expected to reduce costs

The only thing I can make of this is that it reduces cash outflows to Fidelity (the 401(k) custodian) and increases transfers to MITIMCo.

I had never heard of NMH until I went to look for their radio station in the mid-90s, shortly after I moved to Boston. This is odd, because NMH was reputed to be the cheapest of the major New England boarding schools, and when I was in seventh grade I toured Deerfield, Exeter, and Cheshire as a prospective student. (Of course I didn't end up going to any of them.) But I wonder if there may have been a religious aspect to not visiting NMH.

Today I learned that Northfield Mount Hermon school, an expensive prep school near Greenfield, Mass., was founded by the evangelical preacher D.L. Moody, the same guy as the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.

According to a recent survey by the Boston Fed, Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, and the Boston Foundation, #Massachusetts has extremely broad wealth disparities:

Homeowners: $790,000
Renters: $1,500

White: $549,200
AAPI: $305,000
Black: $7,800
Hispanic: $1,200

65+: $702,500

These are median household net wealth, so they are not distorted by small numbers of extremely wealthy individuals. The first two give an idea just how much family wealth is tied up in real estate.

Why the fuck is this firefox suddenly trying to open PDF downloads in inkscape? Never ever ever ever ever the right thing.

tfw you get a vacation autoresponse from a faculty member saying they're on sabbatical and you can't understand how they've been around that long. kids these days, already getting sabbaticals...

I am so ready to be DONE with these zpool resilvers. And they were totally needless, except ZFS doesn't have way to say "you know that device I just removed? same bits but it's now called XXX instead of YYY". Four servers, and the smallest one requiring this treatment needed 30 disks "replaced". The biggest, 102 (and it's finally close to done).
