Some time in the 1990s Dublin children stopped riding bikes and walking to school https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2026/10/13/sadhbh-oneill-when-did-children-stop-playing-outside/

@ccferrie I'm looking for Lullymore Terrace in the 1926 census but it's not appearing. D'you know if it was called something else?
Death by firing squad, an example
#DeathPenalty #Savages
![This report gives a sanitised version of what happened when Rory O'Connor, Dick Barrett, Liam Mellowes & Joe McKelvey were executed [illegally - they were already in jail before the "Murder Law" was passed] by the Free State Govt, of which Eoin Mac Neill was part. What actually happened is best described by the words of Brian's cousin, Hugo MacNeill [who isn't buried here, but was born nearby in Howth]:
"At 8am the officer in charge of the firing squad gave the order to fire. The majority of those in the firing squad aimed at Rory O'Connor. We had detailed five members to fire at each prisoner but this didn't happen. Rory O'Connor fell dead immediately. There were so many bullets in him that his clothes went on fire.
None of the other prisoners were dead after the first volley. Two of them were on the ground. | walked over and gave them the coup de grace by revolver. While | was doing this, Joe McKelvey cried to the Medical Officer: "For Christ's sake, kill me Doc!"
The doctor, seeing that | was standing in a daze, pulled me away from the other men and grabbed me by my Sam Browne belt and pulled me down until | was close to Joe McKelvey, who said: "Another one!" | then shot him in the chest through the paper target. But it wasn't enough and he repeated: "Another one!" This | gave him and | was satisfied he was dead."](https://cdn.masto.host/mastodonie/media_attachments/files/117/409/978/230/196/591/original/1ac9c038bb709dd5.png)
Remember when Americans were (rightly) horrified at the savagery of the Taliban's public hangings?

Jesus, I hate this CE and BCE affectation. It's the only example of woke that I truly loathe. To abandon a thousand-year-old terminology while still using its logic in a hidden way is so stupid. If you object to Christianity being the basis of a dating system, be brave enough to found a new one, like the French revolutionaries!

The legend is that the British didn't know about the Holocaust, and reacted with shock when it was revealed by soldiers reacying the camps in 1944-45, "But in 1942, the year in which most victims of the Holocaust were murdered, you couldn’t really escape this information in Britain. It was in every newspaper. It was on the BBC."

The old US soap Friends is showing on Irish TV and I'm seeing things I didn't see the first time: Joey is a leech, Rachel is just horrid, Monica is even horrider, Ross is a whiner, Chandler is purple from drugs and pain, Phoebe is the centre of good - and the most recent episode, Rachel is supposedly at full term while clearly six months pregnant. What, were they afraid to show a genuine pregnancy?

No mention of the G word. “Unjustifiable” makes the slaughter of tens of thousands sound as if there were no killers involved

Evidence from the Netherlands shows that bike-friendly streets increase retail sales by up to 25%.
Regular cycling reduces risk of chronic illnesses by up to 27%, leading to fewer hospital admissions and lower medical costs. These benefits increase with age. Cycling infrastructure must be attractive, safe and inviting to older people.
Dutch cycling prevents around 6,500 premature deaths each year, saving the healthcare system €3 billion annually.
