If a zero has a diagonal to distinguish from print style O, does its diagonal typically/ideally

I wish I could thank whichever #datahoarder started seeding the en_simple and fr 2020 (I couldn't find the early to mid 2022) pre-genai wikipedia #zim torrents. I've been trying a while and am apparently the only seeder now.
There's a chance they're on fedi...

@ai6yr having been a mid/backend dev most of my career, I was floored when I saw hundreds to thousands of warnings for the various JS packages even a small web app loads.

Sure, most are trivial but you absolutely can't verify all of them.

Also why I always run NoScript when browsing. Nothing runs unless it's on my whitelist.

People would be amazed how many websites load *dozens* of 3td party scripts

If both hands are full (or greasy/sticky/grimy/unavailable), what do you most prefer to use to flip the lightswitch?

If you see ads pointing you to votesafe.org to check your voter registration, read this first.

VoteSafe is run by America PAC, Elon Musk's super PAC. It is not a government site. Its own footer says "Paid for by America PAC."

It also doesn't register anyone. The flow ends by telling you to download a PDF, print it, and mail it in yourself.

Its privacy policy (updated Aug 29, 2026) lets America PAC share your info with "business partners" for targeted marketing, or sell it. That includes whether you're registered to vote and "how you submit your vote." Popular Information found your address going to Facebook and Google, a hashed email to The Trade Desk, your usage to X, and a device fingerprint that survives cookie deletion.

VoteSafe also white-labels voter sites for allied groups, including Sentinel Action Fund and Ready to Register. North Carolina's election board warned in July that Ready to Register mailings used an outdated form, went to deceased voters, and had QR codes that could pre-populate other people's data.

To check your registration, use your state's official portal, https://vote.gov, or https://vote.org. None of them sell your data.

I planted the rudbekia this June but I'm not happy with the placement. When is the proper time to dig them up and replant them?

New ‘conservation deed’ aims to protect tree kangaroos, forests, people in Papua New Guinea

"On June 30, 266 clan leaders across 41 villages in Papua New Guinea’s Torricelli Mountains signed a legally binding “conservation deed” that protects rainforest and its inhabitants and is the result of decades of work by the Tenkile Conservation Alliance.

The deed shields the range’s exceptional biodiversity, including the critically endangered tenkile and weimang tree kangaroos, after a long-stalled effort to secure formal government protected-area status has left communities exposed to logging pressure.

Conservation deeds have held up in court, with a 2025 National Court ruling citing one to restrict logging on clan lands in East New Britain.

Built over two years through a free, prior and informed consent process, the Torricelli deed bans commercial logging and mining, as well as the hunting of threatened species, renews every five years and gives the alliance a model it now plans to extend to nearby areas under similar threat."

🦉 TIL: Where a forest meets a meadow, that narrow strip has more species than either habitat on its own. It's called the edge effect, and it's been in ecology textbooks since the 1950s.

The ecotone (transition zone) doesn't just mix species from both sides. It has its own distinct community with organisms found in neither adjacent habitat. A 2023 study found forest edges had diagnostic species that avoid interiors entirely.

But edges are also fragile. Nest predation for songbirds spikes at forest edges. Artificial edges from fragmentation tend to degrade, with invasives moving in. A 674-study meta-analysis found the effect flips by latitude: temperate edges gain species, tropical edges lose them.

People love extending this to creativity. The idea that boundaries between disciplines produce the most interesting work has real academic backing. Researchers proposed "innovation ecotones" as the zone between knowledge and business ecosystems. But the ecology carries a caveat the self-help versions skip: edges are where novel things emerge AND where things are most precarious.
