💉 Got my COVID-19 and flu jabs yesterday. Waking up this morning with two sore arms, but otherwise feeling okay.

👨‍💻 It’s quiet around here, first time in a week. I’m listening to Pearl Jam and making some blog updates.

Kodachrome (2017)

When it’s just the two of them onscreen, Ed Harris and Jason Sudeikis are luminous. Jonathan Tropper’s script is predictable and ponderous, and there aren’t enough rolls of undeveloped color reversal film — the contents of which we knew precisely in the 36th minute — to make up for decades of parental absenteeism. I’ve said it before, good acting can’t save bad writing. Upside: there’s some great music. (2 stars out of 5)

Ted Lasso season 4 (2026)

I was hesitant about this season, but it quickly drew me in. Tanya Reynolds is flawless and the new cast works together just as well as the old. “Yes & Baby” was my favorite episode and may be one of the best Lasso episodes ever. I’m looking forward to season 5. (4½ stars out of 5)

Very excited for new seasons of a couple of my favorite shows!

So I turned my little monogram into a sticker! It’s my first attempt so they’re very plain and small, about 2 inches square. I’d be happy to share them with my Mastodon friends. If you want one, message me at https://contact.mihobu.net/

Anybody remember how to set up neatstats?

🎃 New recipe from the Mihobu Test Kitchen™! These were originally called “Maple Brown Butter Chewy Pumpkin Cookies,” or something similarly clunky. But I call them “Pumpkin Snickerdoodles” because that’s what they remind me of.

Make them. Eat them. You’ll thank me.

I didn’t take a photo — I always forget — so you’ll just have to trust me.

🔒 TIL about the keyless mini lockers at Planet Fitness. I wonder if they’ll be hard to access as the weather gets colder.

Higher ed is broken and has been for a while. AI is not to blame. Young people are right and smart to challenge the value of a four-year degree. Long overdue changes are coming.

😱 Experiencing my own personal horror show today. I think we’ll get through it but it isn’t going to be cheap.

40 weeks in the books already! Here’s my 162nd #weeknotes post: “Back to Normal, Sort Of”

Every time I go on a big trip, I learn something new — often the hard way — that I try to incorporate into my practice.

22, A Million by Bon Iver (2016)

Justin Vernon’s reflections on growing up, losing faith, coping with anxiety, and finding spirituality are well documented. Musically, it’s an odd one for sure — noisy, glitchy, weird — but also melodic and soothing. I don’t know about all that stuff, I just know that it resonates with me somehow. (4½ stars out of 5)

Fediverse, the social media system for 40+ year old people who built the world wide web and regret it.

🎃 I can’t believe it’s October already.

Dungeon Crawler Carl

This book by Matt Dinniman made me laugh out loud several times, but that’s the best thing I can say about it. The first-person shooter perspective is clever, but it quickly wears off as the tedious prose reveals its modus operandi. The true point of the book, like the video games that inspired it, isn’t some distant goal but the endless fighting itself. Scene after scene after scene, on and on and on, I found myself blurting out “it’s still going” nearly as often as Carl blurts out his famous catchphrase, “Goddamnit, Donut!” And still there are more books?! 😠 Putting on your blinker doesn’t make it my job to slow down for you on the highway, nor does it make it OK for you to cut me off.

🚗 Good morning! Starting the day at the gym, then off on a little road trip.

Any Casio G-Shock enthusiasts out there interested in this GW5000HS-1? I bought it new in April, but hardly worn because I don’t love the black/reversed display. I’m willing to part with it for considerably less than the $330 I paid. Message me here or privately at https://contact.mihobu.net
