(It's usually eaten with lime and chili powder.)

If we're not going to let Trump rename the Atlantic Ocean for himself, I propose that we attempt to placate him by renaming the Great Pacific Garbage Patch after him.

Trying something new. I can now confirm that jicama with lime and ginger is also an excellent way to make a healthy, spicy snack.

“It’s good for boilerplate”, my god _who cares_. What else are we all rebuilding or recreating over and over again because we’re doing it alone. What should be part of a new standard library, a standard datatype or utility, a new primitive hiding in plain sight.

Please help!

Current status, as of Oct 23:

***Our electricity has 3 days before it's cut off***

My wife is switching jobs. She'll get a little bit worse pay but better and more consistent hours. (It's also unionized, so yay!) But there was a hiccup with the scheduling: She expected to start last Wednesday, so she quit at Walmart, but now they've moved her start date to this coming Thursday, so we lost a week of pay.

In the meantime, we have to pay $223.26 by 10/26 to avoid our electricity being disconnected. I'm also getting calls about our internet going unpaid.

Can anybody help us out, please?

I was recently laid off again, before we could properly get back on our feet. We have no savings. My wife's new part time job at Walmart isn't enough to even cover our bills alone, much less food and gas. We really need help. We are eating one meal a day, mostly consisting of hot dogs, beans, or eggs, but even that isn't a sure thing. And we are out of food for our dogs.

Please boost for reach! (If you've already boosted, you can unboost and then boost again.) Any help you can give, however small, can make a huge difference for us.

This one's just for you:

Ugh, my CPAP mask must have been at a bad angle or something. I have that same "dead inside" feeling and sore throat from snoring that I used to have every day, back before I learned I have apnea. This is going to last all day. It always does.

Computers were not a mistake.

The Internet was not a mistake.

The mistake was allowing everything to be about money and power rather than community building.

A good friend of mine recently said companies need to primarily serve society else they cause society to crumble and collapse. And I’m still thinking about this, the implications, and what is happening 🤔🙁

@hosford42 that's a fear I have since... 2007 ... even before deep fake was a concept :p

@hosford42 secret family words are back.
We use them for children, so they know a grown up is really who they say they are now using them on line

Another way to do it: If they can point to a web page they control which makes reference to the communication route they are using to talk to you, then however confident you are about the authenticity of that page, mostly transfers to the communication method. So a GitHub account that existed before LLMs and has remained in continuous use might make you pretty confident you're talking to a real person, while a new blog account with a single post wouldn't lend much credibility. (You still have to worry if the GitHub account has been hacked.)

Example: Ask them where they are, and only after they answer, ask them for a pic to prove it. (Works best if it's a place you know personally, that isn't well-known enough to be easily faked from online images.)

I was just reading about voice cloning, and how it's gotten good enough even to fool family members. Live phone calls aren't enough anymore. If you need to make sure someone is real, **ask them to do something verifiable in the real world.**

If that isn't an option, take a cue from 2-factor authentication and ask them to point you to other accounts or communication methods they have control over, and to prove it's them right then and there, without advanced warning. That at least cuts down on the odds of them successfully pulling a fast one.

If you wrote something to me, and I didn't respond, I'm not ignoring you.

It finally bit me. My Tusky app that I use for Mastodon has a button on the notifications page in a very easy to hit place to delete *all* notifications. It has a pop-up confirmation, which I learned from all the times I accidentally hit that button. This time, my finger was already headed for the notification I was trying to visit, when the pop-up confirmation took the focus. I have no notifications at all, and I am not pleased. I've managed to dodge that minor disaster for years, until today.
