Put me down as someone who thinks the phrase "Digital Twin" is buzzword bullshit indistinguishable from a "model".

I lock eyes
"So your reason to never buy an electric car is that 8 years ago in another country you saw a lot of cars and someone told you the government didn't know what to do with them and as a result you will never buy an electric car. Is that right?' maintaining eye contact.
'um, yes?'
"Cool man makes perfect sense"

I've worked in electric vehicle stuff since 2014 and I'm still in awe of the reasons people have for rejecting EVs out of hand. Dropped the Leaf of for rego inspection. (5th year running no maintenance)
I say to the mechanic "good little car that. Cheap as anything to run and no maintenance"
'oh I'll never buy an electric car'
"Oh? Why's that?"
'in 2018, I was in China for work. Stayed in this hotel..across the road was a big lot with 24,000 evs in it the government didn't know what to do with '

They use words that have normal meaning outside of the software world, but don't indicate that they're using those words to mean Software.

Something that's been bugging me for ages and I've just realised what it is; software people never mention Software as the thing they're doing. "I'm a product manager". Of what? I always thought. Just reading a CV on LinkedIn too, it's all ecosystems and project and product management. But what did you actually do? Oh it's software.

I love that Microsoft has different spell checker treatments in different programs! It's great! Right click in the MS Suite, left click online! Well done everyone!

My voice-to-text just misheard "perspex" as "Fistex", which is an entirely different product.

Microsoft is the most miserable fucking company in the world and I've just spent an hour yelling FUCK OFF at my computer. Try and find out if you have a Visio subscription and then download it. The fucking app doesn't exist in their app store. You have to do a million fucking things then they trick you into buying it. FUCK OFF

UPDATE: Chicks have fledged! Gosh they're tiny. Feathers more vivid than their parents at this age. Impossible to photograph with a phone, forget it.

I had a little feeling that the Scrub-Wrens had built a nest next to my office; confirmed this morning, heard cheeping mouths this morning #Spring

I met someone at a party once who told me she's a photographer. Oh yeah, what sort of thing?
"I'm a proposal specialist. I organise to hide and photograph the proposal moment".
I remain flabbergasted this exists.

I've never been clear on the difference between "effect" and "affect" and so every time it gets iffy I use "impact" instead. There's probably a hint there but I haven't got it yet.

One of the things that has struck me about the Nepal flood is that it appears to be a very surprising hazard for the people there, possibly a new one. None of the infrastructure was built for anything even remotely like that happening. Never crossed their minds.

An AI writing tool popped up in a blog editor I'm using. It said "ask me anything" so I typed "turn this AI tool off and never turn it on again"
At which point it wrote 2500 words into my blogpost about how to turn off AI tools and never turn them on again. I saw Kubernetes mentioned.

Universities are basically impossible to work with.

At the risk of stating the bloody obvious, this Nepal flood is a disaster.
My first degree is in Geography and we did a long unit on natural hazards. This sort of glacial lake burst is 1. hard to monitor and 2. hard to stop. Every melt season will be tenterhooks

Where would sick people be without toast?

Pretty sure this is COVID. Not sure if you've heard of it, but it's no joke

I'm putting together some photos for my work website. I should include this in the "Don't" section?

In response though, I have been sent a spreadsheet with every single one of my 960 expenses from the last 12 months, a copy of the travel and expenses policy and been asked to explain how each expense meets the policy.
This is going to be some of the most malicious compliance ever. I am writing complete answers to every single line and referring to the policy number for each line item. This will take me days and I am not doing anything else until it's done.
