#DoNotStare aaand we’re back

#DoNotStare we’ll go down for a very brief maintenance window to apply patches, starting ~now. should only take a few minutes - sorry

and we are back up :)

The system is going down for reboot NOW!

Okay, this instance is now back thanks to a quick WireGuard tunnel from @domi.

I hope to be back as AS211370 in a few days 👀

did I waste a bunch of time thinking that my mount -o remount,ro / went through? yes, why do you ask

aside: it’s so stupid how many different ways linux has to mount something read-only (per mount, per block, with dmsetup…), but when the user requests it, suddenly it’s literally impossible because programs have open fds, and the kernel is very shy?

genuinely, out of all of the options that I found mentioned online, the only one that did anything was fsfreeze. fsfreeze is also a piece of garbage which is likely to hang your entire system, because all write operations block forever instead of being added to an in-memory COW or getting dropped. literally free “fuck up your system immediately” binary

reposting from #infraX when the instance was down

<@dmi> did you know: BSD `mount` has `-f` for `force`
<@dmi> GNU `mount` has `-f` for `fake`

The new policies for the Linux kernel make it more or less impossible to support a slop-free fork of Linux, so if you're worried about the reliability of your system level software, or have ethical concerns about LLM usage on your computer, the time to act is, well, now.

If you have time this weekend, I recommend you to try one of the slop-free systems: NetBSD, 9front, Haiku, or OpenBSD. If you're adventurous, you could try new AlpineBSD, or research smaller systems, like RedoxOS or FreeDOS. If you don't feel adventurous, you might want to check out anti-AI Linux distributions, like Elementary or Gentoo.

There's no "one solution that fits all". But there's a solution that I chose for myself, and that's NetBSD: it gives me the most freedom, it supports most of my hardware, and can run a great deal of software I need. It's not easy to run, but it's a great learning opportunity. There's quite a few folks around using BSD and capable of giving hints and advice, so if you feel stuck, toot about #netbsd.

#DoNotStare we’re back! sorry for the outage.

shoutouts to bitflips on bits 28 and 30 in particular. gotta be one of my favourite ways to corrupt a database

#DoNotStare will return... soon.

#DoNotStare hey! we will need to bring the instance down temporarily for database maintenance. Probably around an hour or two, starting $soon.

More details TBA. join #infraX on hackint for updates.

#OH: There we go, a merlin that won’t break

This is a long shot, but: does anyone have access to a Supermicro H11DST-B *version 2.x* motherboard?

We (@hswaw) suspect that the only important difference with 1.x is a larger NOR flash for the firmware. If so, a little hot air action would allow an upgrade to Zen 2 CPUs, and get big perf/power-efficiency gains on a budget.

Boosts much appreciated!
