A skeleton wearing a ghost as a costume. The ghost is wearing and piloting the loader exoskeleton from Aliens. The loader exoskeleton is wearing a pointy hat and holding a broom.

I had never actually seen a wooly bear face before now! This one seemed determined to show its face so I obliged with some photos.

Morally nuanced clowns

Oh yes I absolutely love to wake up and find multiple admin logins to my website from Indonesia and Ukraine, and they added pages to my site.

Watching a show and I had to pause it for a minute just to fascinate on this young woman’s incredible style. There’s the jewelry across the face of course, but look at everything else. The symmetrical nose piercings, asymmetrical ink above the eyes, the remarkable shaped eyebrows, the sharp lapels. The gap in her front teeth is probably natural, but goddamn it looks styled. Overall intimidating in the best way!

I used the term “third-rate” earlier and realized I would have to look up its origins. Turns out it comes from the British navy, where they ranked their cannon-bearing sailing ships by how many crew or guns they held. A first rate ship was one with the highest number of sailors or cannons. Third rate was actually a middle level, not bad at all, maneuverable and perfectly capable in combat. But somehow [waves hands] it converted from meaning a good ship that isn’t the biggest, to something kinda crappy we feel condescending about. Maybe it was officers from the first rate ships snobbily talking down about others?

Someone posted “stronk, like bull” here and it reminded me that my mother used to say that line back in the 70s. I searched to see what the quote is actually from, and it turns out to be not so easy to answer! Many other people have asked the question in assorted forums over the years, and most of the replies posted are wildly mistaken guesses at movies from the 90s. Everyone remembers it said by a Slavic, Eastern European or Russian person, often an older woman. But the earliest use found so far is from a Lebanese character named Uncle Tonoose in the Danny Thomas TV show from 1956 (season four). He uses the line to praise a potential wife for his nephew, and later says it about himself. Apparently Yul Brynner (Russian) then used the line in the 1962 movie Taras Bulba, but I haven’t watched to confirm it. Do you know of any other contemporary or earlier examples?

I passed by this web the next day and the spidey had made a lot of progress filling out the space. I was going to take a follow up pic but right at that moment one of my dogs ran through it.

Not just a Mothman, but a real Mothmensch

Random childhood memory of the song “Rock o’ my soul in the bosom of Abraham”. I don’t recall how or why I heard it so much, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Elvis. The main thing I remember is asking my grandparents to explain the lyric. I got stuck on picturing everyone trying to snuggle up to Abraham Lincoln’s breasts.

I see the forkiverse is shutting down! Not a surprise—that guy was a loser, a corporate leech, and an entryist. However if you found fedi via the #forkiverse and you liked it, there are lots of much better servers to sign up on, please do stick around!

I don’t understand the lifted trucks where you can see that the suspension struts protrude down to the normal clearance height of a non-lifted truck.
