Ukraine is making sure the Russians can't export that diesel.

Dear Zelensky - I'm exceptionally happy that you give the 🖕 to the 🟠 🤡

SLAVA!

How much of YOUR data is on a computer that you do not own?

Me: None of it.

Russians understand this, thanks to Ukraine (slava!). Do YOU?

If you suffer from (seasonal) migraines, I'm sorry. They really, REALLY suck. Mine correlate directly with the weather. The single Atlantic hurricane of the year that came our way, Isaias, triggered the first one. Then the massive weather shift, going from very warm to very cold in a couple days destroyed me for 3 days. I still have brain fog which may persist for a few days.

I take Qulipta as a preventative, but even that can't stop these massive hammer blows to my head by the weather.

Community college is legit folks. Trade school is legit folks.

I went to community college and work in the trades (energy). And have no student debt.

Consumer spending is up? Yes! Because everything costs a fucking fortune you degenerate ancient turds.

My bodged together personal data center draws 1.3kW continuous, higher when computing. It has 15kWh battery storage backup (+ a lot more if I switch on the house microgrid during an outage). The heat pump water heater nearby recycles the waste heat into hot water 😆

EDIT: There are 3 servers missing from this photo as they're placed elsewhere: 1 off-site air-gapped backup mirror, 1 onsite air-gapped mirror, and 1 onsite public data archive.

100% solar powered. No cloud needed. Oh and all of this is DDR3 platforms!!

It appears that the rising global interest rates are only causing the AI industry to accelerate their borrowing and spending. Which is opposite of what a rate hike is supposed to accomplish.

It seems the old economic rules no longer work on the monster that the global economy has become.

Oh crap, you mean your life's data was on a computer you don't own? oh no

Meet SolarAI LLM Server V2, now complete. Probably the world's first quad GPU, DDR3 based rig using HDDs for LLM storage that generates 33.4 tps with the Strata QWEN3.8-120b model, and it cost me about a grand USD.

This is the hardware/software stack:

-Asus Z9PE-D16 motherboard
-CPU: 2x Intel Xeon E5-2620 V2 Processor
-GPU: FOUR NVIDIA Tesla P100 16GB PCIe (64GB VRAM)
-RAM: 128GB DDR3
-Storage: 120GB SSD for OS
-Storage: FOUR 500GB WD Velociraptor HDDs for models
-OS: ubuntu-24.04.5 server amd64
-CUDA 12 for Pascal

It will run my Hermes/Home Assistant, and is not used to generate slop.

Fascinating RAM speed tests here.

DDR3 rig: 14.1 GB/s (LGA2011, quad, 128GB)
DDR4 rig: 26.5 GB/s (AM4, dual, 64GB)
DDR5 rig: 44.2 GB/s (AM5, dual, 128GB)

This local LLM server V2 should do rather well! Each P100 can load a model sitting in DDR3 in about 1 second. So 4 seconds. I can switch model in and out of GPU pretty fast for PCIe3 + DDR3. The P100 is 732 GB/s, so inference should be insane.

Banshee's opinion of Amazon 😆 But so many affordable cat toys 🤷‍♀️

I have a funny feeling that 2027 will be the year of global economic collapse....or at least a LOT of pain. A LOT.

In other words, we're at 30k and there are fumes in the cockpit.

Between WWIII, the AI bubble, dead consumer HW industry, poor literacy, bond market collapse, inflation, global roasting, coming famines and energy crises - the house of cards will have a lot to resist. And the US regime that thinks it controls the world is too stupid to see it.

The broligarchs have their bunkers. The rest of us have skills and barter. We have to band together. The resistance isn't just resisting fascism any more, it's utter survival.

So if an American installs Win11 but chooses English-Europe, rather than English-US, most of the shitware doesn't get installed. The more you know (don't use Win11 if you can help it 😆 I tested this in VirtualBox) #enshittification

My DIY OPNSENSE router, built on an old-arse AMD dual core handles 10 gigabit just fine. https://lydie.cc/opnsense-router.html #homelab

It runs hot though! But it was free.

The Frankenstein system is complete!

-ASRock 990FX Extreme 4 Motherboard
-AMD FX8350 CPU
-32GB DDR3 RAM
-Multiple SSD/HDD in 2.5" SATA Rack
-nVidia 2080 TI GPU
-3.5" Floppy Drive
-Removable IDE HDD Rack
-WiFi 6 PCIe
-NEC USB 3.0 PCIe + Onboard USB 3.0
-Bazzite & Windows 7

It's a small case, with a lot crammed inside, but it allows me to work with just about anything, old and new.

41 dead terabytes. Life of a data hoarder! Bytes lost = 0. RAID used = none (everything is fully mirrored 3 times). #selfhosted #selfhosting #homelab #harddrives

September is always a good month for solar generation, it's a bit cooler but the days aren't short yet.

6.2 MWh banked for winter.

I am not rich. I'm smart with money, e.g.

-We buy a lot of used/refurb/renewed stuff.
-We buy mostly generic groceries and waste almost no food.
-I buy no-name clothes and shoes. The ones I have on were $15.
-I don't stream or pay for cloud subscriptions.
-I love to barter (bonus - can't tax this!)
-I buy renewed unlocked phones and cheap prepaid cell plans.
-Other bonus cost savers: We have free energy due to a paid off solar array + EV, 2.7% mortgage, well+septic so no utility bills.

So where do I splurge?

-A fat fiber Internet pipe @ $130 per month.
-Homelab technology @ why am I broke? per month. 😆
-Vinyl records.
-Craft beer. Sometimes.
