this is a bit of rant. my apologies:
tl;dr: its (long past?) time for those of us who aren't chasing unicorns and their fad driven tech and process choices to make it clear that they are #notmyindustry
----
I'm Increasingly of the opinion that what is needed is for us non-SV tech folk to break up with Silicon Valley entirely:
In the ~30 years I've been working to solve problems using computing technology in many domains and companies across the midwest, I never really felt represented by (or any real identity with) what was going on in SV.
But, in the past decade or so that feeling has gotten markedly worse... all while their special sort of crazy has increasingly infected these same non-SV tech orgs that used to be largely immune to their whims and fads.
Meanwhile, whatever purported benefit SV was providing to the US/world/humanity seems to not even being paid lip service anymore, replaced instead by a massive pump and dump culture that increasingly doesn't even bother to hide its corruption.
If they ever cared about doing a good job, long term value, or any other thing that has driven most of the value decisions in MY experience, they certainly don't seem to anymore.
This isn't something to be reformed (or unionized, or otherwise moderated) it's something to be DISMANTLED. But failing that, those of us who are not "SV" need not passively allow them to speak for us to a public (and upcoming generations of technologists!) that doesn't seem to get that they aren't in it for anyone but their early investors and couldn't care less about technology (let alone public welfare or shareholder value... or ANYTHING but getting *more*) but someone has to (care about the tech I mean), and who better than those of us who love solving problems with computing and yet don't identify with what they do and increasingly don't seem to be doing the same work anyway?
I'm not entirely certain whether this would make a difference, but I also don't see any reason to continue the relationship, so SV? it's been real. but it's over. You're #notmyindustry
Thanks for listening.
