My two favorite podcasters have a conversation! And it is truly worth your time:

https://braininspired.co/podcast/248

It's about Andrea Hiott's new book: "Holding Paradox."

Cognition is *not* computation, but navigating one's situation in life. It arises naturally from basic organismic agency.

Life is so much more than problem-solving. You should get out more, if you disagree.

Depending on your fedi timeline the reaction to php2shell you might either have seen are:

Either, celebrating an enormous and thankless effort to fix things, done by people who on average are probably paid close to zero for this.

Or, one of the world's worst peanut galleries saying "Well, *I* would just have…" – consisting in large part of people who no one wants to let within 10 feet of their server architecture and who never tried working with others.

#php #php2shell

Happy birthday to Ursula K. Le Guin. "We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings."

oh huh it *is* still Cybersecurity Awareness Month

ARE YOU FUCKING AWARE YET

Traveling to the #Worldmaking Forum 2026 in #Berlin today.

https://worldmakingforum2026.sutra.co

Staying in a little nest of contrarians on invitation of Alexander Bard.

I'll be participating in two panels, and will be opening the workshop tomorrow morning with a little worldmaking practice designed by #ThePerspectiveStudio.

I have not been as excited about a workshop in a very long time!

@yoginho @UlrikeHahn I agree, including the "happy to be wrong" part. Academia is too dependent on governments (and the private entities that constrain governments) today to improve its incentive structure profoundly. My goal is to contribute to the pockets of sanity that remain, which could become the seeds of better structures after the inevitable crash of the worldwide growth engine.

#AI #Anthropic #TechScam #AIBubble

Nothing puts the lie to "PHP is irrelevant" like "good morning, 70% of the internet needs to be fixed ASAP".

@UlrikeHahn @khinsen Totally agreed. I left academia almost ten years ago for a reason. I did not have the imperession then that it was salvagable as a system. I certainly do not think it's salvagable now. We need something like it, for sure, but that new incentive structure can probably only be build on the ashes of the old institutions.

Happy to be wrong here. But not optimistic...

@UlrikeHahn @khinsen Mind you, I'm already living under a bridge, academically speaking (or better: in self-imposed exile in my cabin in the woods) so it's all the same to me. I do think if you're a tenured academic, you have quite some leeway. It may be rough to go your own way, and your colleagues may shun you and forget about you. But I've stopped caring about that a long, long time ago. I just want to understand life, teach, and write books/do art about it. And I mostly do that for myself.

@gepasi I mean, there *are* exceptions and a few good use cases as well. It's just the overall effect that will be truly devastating. So much human potential lost. Even before AI. But this technology is certainly *not* helping.

And it's not just my 14y-olds. So many of my scientist and philosopher colleagues claim to use #AI "responsibly," but nobody really does. We're lying to ourselves here. It's just too enticing to be sloppy.

That's why I just say no to this technology. I won't use it for my research or writing *at all.* Period.

Don't give in! Unsloppified work will be sought after in the future. Mark my words.

Teaching #AI to my middle-schoolers this afternoon. We're in the project stage of the course. After having discussed how *not* to use LLMs in the past few sessions, they all did exactly that, of course: a quick prompt, slop was produced, and then the claim that "this is better than anything I could have ever done myself." This is depressing. And it drives home to me that this is a technology that is explicitly designed to make humanity a lot dumber and lazier than it already is...
