The “supply chainification of everything” is perhaps one of the most dehumanizing things possible.

Five stars for these two stars!

I don’t mind the roumbd firefox tabs 🤷

I love how we went from "BRB 30min downtime" to rolling kubernete pod update with zero downtime.

Does anyone here have a favorite in-class exercise for helping students consider how algorithms work? Ideally this is completely non-computational—I just want them to try to think procedurally about how they would need to transform data—ideally historical/texty data—step by step

Who are the Jane Goodalls and David Attenboroughs of software?

A little tool to decode Morse code

For years, I've been following projects and publications that focus on data visualization for critique, deliberation, and empowerment. Over the past year, on and off, I've been organizing them into a collection:

💬 DATA IN DIALOGUE
An Interactive Atlas of Critical Data Visualization
https://infovis.fh-potsdam.de/atlas/

It's not really finished, and may never be, but it's functional enough to share. If you find something missing, broken, or wrong, please reach out!

I'm playing records on the internet again.

23 years of Wikimedia Foundation

7 months of Wiki Workers United's union campaign

2 months since requesting voluntary recognition in the UK with a supermajority of eligible staff

1 month since requesting voluntary recognition in the US with a supermajority of eligible staff

Statutory recognition is expected soon in the UK, as we have the numbers

On September 3 the US votes will be counted; again we expect to have the numbers to win NLRB recognition.

Secret orgchart-wallhack management-level s-tier superpower strategy: In your first month at any new job find the people who colour-code their spreadsheets. In any large organization, that will be about one person in two hundred. If they haven't met, introduce them to each other.

In six weeks, for zero visible reasons, that organization will be like 50% more effective and you will have a better understanding of how the org really functions than the C-suite.

Software was troubled before LLMs offered to fix it. Many have enumerated the causes but all seem beyond repair. I’ve offered my solutions which all seem dated. One has only ask, who benefits from the disfunction?

C.S. Peirce was the grandfather of Codd’s relational database model.

"In computer science, the relational model for databases was developed with Peircean ideas in work of Edgar F. Codd, who was a doctoral student of Arthur W. Burks, a Peirce scholar.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Sanders_Peirce#Relational_logic

Good grief. Peirce is the Genghis Kahn of ideas: an absurd number of them have his genetics, can trace their lineage back to him.
