DreamWeb got a generally lukewarm reception from many gaming mags at release, but almost all of them mentioned how extreme some of the depicted violence was.

one of the early scenes in the game has some incredibly detailed animation worthy of a second glance in spite of the grisly violence.

in particular, watch the can of pop thrown into the pool, and how it leaves little ripples before it burps out a final gasp of air

all of this was done without the benefit of alpha transparency and layers. every pixel was animated by hand by david dew.

💾 NEW PODCAST!💾 Can you believe we've been doing this show for over 8 years, but never featured an Infocom text adventure??

It's time to set that right, as we look at Steve Meretzky's Planetfall from 1983.

Playing this game, you'll assume the role of a lowly ensign 7th class aboard a starship, tasked with mopping the floor. Luckily you're located close to the escape pods, because things are about to get wild!

in case anyone is curious about the underlying cause of it being impossible to migrate a mastodon server from one domain to another, this limitation is due to the activitypub protocol itself, which (simplifying for brevity) uses the equivalent of absolute/hardcoded URLs for posts

this fediverse enhancement proposal allows for relative domain names. given that it was written a year ago, and with the molasses-like development the protocol has, i sadly suspect it's unlikely to be integrated any time soon.

@vga256 I expect we will, thank you for being a great host.

Ugh, I forgot how bad it looked in Netscape. Here's what it looked like in Virtus before I abandoned it 🙂

i have no idea if graffiti gear was a thing outside of canada, but i hope it was 🙏

it enjoyed a brief fad in my elementary school, until someone realized writing swear words in permanent marker was much more appealing than their autograph.

Due to technical limitations with mastodon's architecture - which does not support domain name changes or data migration - dialup.cafe will be closing permanently in one month.

Dialup.cafe instance users: please see the server announcement and get thine affairs in order. 💀

holy crap: mastodon server does not support domain name changes. 😆

i now have to give some serious thought to migrating dialup.cafe -> dialup.party

it would mean setting up a new server from scratch, migrating users to the new server, and losing all of their post history in the process. i am truly dumbfounded at how bad this architecture is.

A question to the #retro #mac (and maybe #GlobalTalk) community:
Is it possible to access the disk in a Apple Time Capsule from Mac OS 9 (via LAN)? I can access it from OS X Tiger, but fail somehow from OS 9...
Thank you!

Last weekend of the month, and I finally have the time to check out our @dosgameclub September game: Ascendancy.

It's a space-themed 4X game from 1995, very much in the same vein as Master of Orion, and it rules.

What's especially great imho is how wild and creative the alien races are.

Benjamin Button reviews macOS

Apple's first desktop operating system was Tahoe. Like any first version, it had a lot of issues. Users and critics flooded the web with negative reviews. While mostly stable under the hood, the outer shell — the visual user interface — was jarringly bad. Without much experience in desktop UX, Apple's first OS looked like a Fisher-Price toy: heavily rounded corners, mismatched c

TTRPG peeps:

I'm preparing some TTRPG content for publication. I have a background in print design & layout and can, I think, write a decent art brief, but I am clueless about best practices for actually working w/ (& fairly paying) artists & illustrators. Any relevant advice/resources you know of?
