maybe hot take, but the largest practical issue with “AI” coding is the velocity. Hard to believe something underwent proper review when someone ships 50 kLoC a week, no matter if they used claude or cocaine to get there.

the beatsaber modding scene is built on computer crimes. I recently learned that the "native arm64 beatsaber port" is done by taking an x86 beatsaber build, dissecting it, then splicing its C# assemblies to a binary arm64 unity runtime from somewhere else and some patched, built-from-source dependencies, then running it in wine.

Good morning! This day of trains started way too early.

Rain (I)

Almost 2 years later, here's the reason why I built this: https://github.com/carrotIndustries/tan-generator A chipTAN TAN generator that runs on a laptop with a smart card reader.

Big thanks go to @schiermi for having reverse engineered the protocol: https://wiki.ccc-ffm.de/projekte:tangenerator:start

so, i absolutely despise what we currently call "ai" and there are plenty of reasons to despise it, starting with the blatant environmental abuse, the way it's making our society stupid, cognitive decline, addiction, being a tool of society-wide political influence, etc

i also hate using it for programming because it turns something I enjoyed/still enjoy into a mindless chore for idiots and in process generates an inferior version of something i can build myself and put some actual thought into

what i don't actually buy is this whole knee-jerk movement of "everything is tainted, retvrn" because it doesn't actually address anything

i've seen this before on a smaller scale with powerpc, where "shit becomes broken" turned into "okay just sticking with old versions of everything" which turned into "2 distros support this now, both poorly" which turned into entirely unfixable "it's now a domain of 3 people running gentoo or 10 years old debian, keeping crappy workarounds for everything, being largely irrelevant"

i like that stuff like netbsd is getting more money and attention (which it should have been getting before all this happened, regardless) but i have a bit of trouble believing this will actually last because any community influx resulting from reactionary movements is largely volatile and typically does not last, and largely also constitutes burden for the project in question

most importantly it still does not deal with "okay but i want to actually reasonably use my modern computer as well as do things on it without getting fucked by an old unfixed security issue or something else"

i don't think that widespread software getting some LLM commits is actually some kind of irreversible taint because in most cases these just tend to be mediocre buggy stuff but not something that would turn the project human-unmaintainable

while the current state sucks i absolutely believe it's possible to recover from it

of course you can raise the whole thing with copyright but also consider this: i don't actually give a fuck about copyright all that much because copyright is mostly an institution to protect rich people and intellectual property is not real

if we as a society decided that copyright is just not a thing now, i would be perfectly fine with it; of course that is not what is actually happening because in practice we are just still pretending that intellectual property is real while giving a bunch of rich power hungry fucks a free pass around it

so, whatever slopping happens is harm that happens regardless of whether you keep some old fork around, and the harm is not getting reversed and absolutely not by isolating yourself with stuff you can't reasonably maintain up to standards (if you actually *do* commit to your thing properly, more power to you of course)

i'm hugely doubtful that most forks that happen "to be slop free" will long term survive and receive the maintenance they require; it'll always be easier to take the codebase as is and unfuck it as necessary

what i'm going to do is keep doing stuff, without using llms; i will continue to reject them and advocate against them as much as is within my power; what i'm not going to do is cut off people from eg being able to properly use their computers and stuff for the sake of purity, or just cut myself off from the current state of things because isolation rarely truly helps

i don't aim this post to be hard on anyone doing good/useful work, mostly wanted to kind of put all my thoughts on the current events together

I was informed that the dnsmasq in my OpenWRT actually has a dhcp-script option that runs a script when a lease changes or is added or deleted. I wanted to call mosquitto_pub from that since mosquitto-tools is available in OpenWRT.

Unfortunately that lead me into several hours of debugging because it didn't work.

Turns out that OpenWRT has put dnsmasq into a jail that only has limited things available from the host system. Among the missing things was most of /bin and /usr/bin, which unfortunately includes my mosquitto_pub that my script called.

Adding /usr/bin/mosquitto_pub as a mount into the jail now makes my router able to publish DHCP lease changes as they happen on MQTT and I can see when my printer is turned on/off :3

random thought:

• you should have forums for your hobby / subculture / open source thing / etc., that are not discord, and that are openly accessible in HTML online. you should try to make those appear on google and be like the place to discuss the thing, if that's at all doable.

• many online subcultures used to have a politeness norm of "don't ask questions without first googling it". this rule is obsolete. googling it doesn't work anymore. stackexchange is dead. it is very difficult already to find reliable information. you need to make it as easy and inviting as possible for curious people and newcomers to get used to asking human beings about the thing. this means tolerating common questions rather than replying to them like "read the FAQ/TFM/search the forum" etc.

• in fact, actively establish spaces specifically meant for people who are too intimidated to ask questions. in a reddit-type forum, do "weekly quick q&a thread—all questions welcome" kinda thing (it's less intimidating to post a brief comment than making a question post). do "weekly casual chat thread" and "beginner's corner" and "off-topic fridays" and stuff like that, too.

• and on the converse, actively discourage people from posting chatbot answers, through both forum rules and fostering forum culture. don't be aggressive about it but also don't be lenient.

We were in the Sierra Elvira range with clients this week. This is a compact but picturesque mountain range located just 10 km NW of Granada. Known for its geological significance, archaeological history, and panoramic views, it's a popular area for hiking and trail running with outstanding vistas of Granada and the Sierra Nevada. Full of interest with Roman remains, medieval fortifications and prehistoric cave dwellings.

Near the summit of the Sierra Elvira, specifically close to the peak of Cerro de Pierno, there's a notable geological feature — a fissure or fracture commonly referred to locally as the Raja de la Sierra Elvira. The fissure is essentially a tectonic fracture rather than volcanic activity from recent geological history but unusual in that it blows hot air up from underground thermal springs.

This is your occasional backup reminder - if you haven’t yet, go start setting up backups of any kind.

If you think you don’t need backups, delete everything you have on the device you’re using right now.

If that seems like a bad idea then you need backups.

Let's start a #silentsunday on the couch. Delving into memories of beautiful mountain hikes in autumn.
Sitting there in the warming sun would be great now. Just that it wouldn't be smart for me today. But autumn isn't over yet 🫰.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Habe gemerkt, dass ich den ganzen Tag noch nix gegessen hab. Daher jetzt schnell Kartoffelpfanne mit Räuchertofu, Pak Choi, Zwiebeln, Kräutern und buttrigem Rapsöl.
