Friend of mine just got laid off after months of harassment and micromanagement by his shitty AI-loving boss.
Anyone in the US who could possibly help a full-stack .NET developer with 3 years of experience #GetFediHired, preferably remote? The constant berating and aggressive micromanagement has understandably taken a toll on their self-esteem and I'd like to prove there's a space in the software industry for them still.
@davidgerard congrats on your suggestion prevailing in the Coxon AfD!
I'm afraid this is too niche and I will receive no help

"When technology companies offer teachers and students ‘AI training’ or promote ‘AI literacy,’ they are engaged in brand marketing, framed as a progressive, philanthropically fundable intervention.
The literacy label locates the problem in users’ understanding rather than in systems’ design, and in doing so, displaces accountability from the companies that built and profit from these systems toward the educators and students who are expected to become fluent in them, and forecloses the prior question of whether fluency is the goal at all.
[...]
The [stochastic parrot] dismissal reflex stabilizes prematurely into the metaphor. The [AI literacy] accommodation reflex senses that the parrot metaphor has become a comfort blanket and concludes that the critique must be updated rather than sharpened.
Without a clear account of what statistical pattern-matching can and cannot do, ‘AI literacy’ remains undefined, critical pedagogy cannot say what it is protecting, and analyses of labor displacement cannot specify what is being displaced.
The stochastic parrot formulation, properly understood, does not function as a conclusion but as a constraint on interpretation; these system produce outputs that resemble plausible continuations of their training distribution, without grounded inference, semantically anchored representation, or the kind of iterative, error-sensitive engagement with the world that characterizes thinking. These are not limitations that scale resolves; they follow from the mechanism itself."

Heard the phrase "moral de-skilling" to describe what happens to people who use AI for decision making, and yeah, this sounds exactly right

Some years ago, I needed to get an visa for urgent travel to China, a process that required me to fly down to SF and stand in a very long line at the Chinese consulate. When I finally handed the woman there my forms, she promptly stamped them and said "you need to take these to Window 2", pointing around the corner. So I walked around the corner...
...where *the same woman* swiveled her chair around and proceeded to check the stamp that she had just applied.
I would have been annoyed if I wasn't in so much awe at discovering the purest form of bureaucracy.
@davidgerard happy to see your name added to the WWU solidarity petition! :)

There really is an opportunity to do some interesting psychological research on why people are so much more willing to write documentation and detailed instructions for AI agents to write code for them than for other human beings to write code for them.
"In Marx’s analysis, social domination in capitalism does not, on its most fundamental level, consist in the domination of people by other people, but in the domination of people by abstract social structures that people themselves constitute. Marx sought to grasp this form of abstract, structural domination - which encompasses, and extends beyond, class domination - with his categories of the commodity and capital. This abstract domination not only determines the goal of production in capitalism, according to Marx, but its material form as well. Within the framework of Marx’s analysis, the form of social domination that characterizes capitalism is not ultimately a function of private property, of the ownership by the capitalists of the surplus product and the means of production; rather, it is grounded in the value form of wealth itself, a form of social wealth that confronts living labor (the workers) as a structurally alien and dominant power."

I suspect I am going to get a lot of use out of this new sticker design.
At some point we went from using the word "photorealistic" to mean "as good at mimicking what the real world looks like as a photograph" to it meaning "photos are what the real world looks like"
