A (young) tech person I know and respect: "I just bought an AI cat feeder and every decision it makes I'm sure drains a river. lol." (of course, paraphrase). Our industry is not morally prepared for this. #AI #LLM #ChatGPT #Anthropic #OpenAI

Huh. Why is "iceland" trendi... oh. No. No no no. Oh how could there be *more* shame? So much more.

LLMs and the sloppification of the internet are the Blade Runner blackout of our timeline, but in reverse. AI is the EMP but any data added after AI is suspect; any that existed before is human-generated (even if garbage).

I created https://thebarbarellalibrary.com a year or so ago to document the 4 Barbarella stories and their various editions. After I moved to Italy, influenced by how Crepax's Valentina was spoken of in the same manner that Forest's Barbarella was, I decided to adapt the web framework for her. As I did so I collected more books and realized that... people need to learn her stories. Here's a start.

People don't talk enough about Alex Garland's movie Civil War. It's not the heavy-handed mess a movie like that could have been, what it somehow rose above, & that's almost more of an achievement than the arresting performances. It's one I both tell people to watch and to avoid watching. It's nuanced and elliptical but we're too immersed to appreciate it fully now but history will see it as, recognize it as, an expression of our scars before they happened.

[Edit: I'd like to request no more boosts for this post for now - my DMs are still open to, and please do still forward this to specific folks you think might be interested. I've got so many responses that it's going to take me a while to get to all of them - which I will. ❤️ you all for being so supportive of this idea.]

I have an offer to make: do you want to run an instance on the fediverse for a group that's underrepresented here?

I'll pay the bills. Period.

I'll do admin if needed (software updates and the like). But you decide what kind of community you want it to be, so you put together the mod team.

DM me.

The black and white animal in Scavengers Reign is one of the most horrifying creatures in sci-fi.

From a friend who works at xxxxx university: "Over two dozen faculty and staff have lost their jobs in three days in my College. About 60 graduate student workers are now unemployed. And this is just the beginning with the cuts to the DOE and other federal agencies. Early projections are that we could lose as much as $15 million in sponsored grants over the next month or two."

One more data point of the complete breakdown of US research and education.

Listening to the Hard Fork podcast and they just joked that the new OpenAI model probably has to cut down a tree every time you ask it a question.

Laughs all around.

This weekend I re-ordered a rare-ish album that I'd originally purchased from Italy because it was not available anywhere in the US. That original order was lost for months in the USPS distribution center even after opening multiple tickets. That distribution center is 20 miles from where I live.

A day ago I got an update on this second order and it's coming from a USPS office 10 miles away.

I'm 90% certain that I just bought my own stolen goods.

So anyway, into our couple of weeks rewatch of Veep we just got to the point where Selena picked an incredibly more charismatic leader that her and her stump speech became: Haven't i made a great choice?!? I'm not hating on Kamala AT ALL, but more that their combination is so ... amazingly outstanding I don't even understand how to process it. !!!!!

Sometime last year, someone in my feed here posted an image of the 1st edition of the Barbarella comics. I'd never seen it before (or really thought about her comics before) but it was much more stylishly designed than I expected & I started collecting different editions. There are a *lot*, so I kept a local database of dates/languages/etc. & eventually decided my monomania needed a website. Early wip, but a good reference for the curious.
