The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot

A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead:

Mom telling me about a friend of a friend who got a million views on art he posted on deviant art. Click the link, "created with AI tools" 😒

Why are you telling your daughter who has made actual award winning art about this person who made a computer make a picture that a million people without taste looked at?

The Linux Foundation Research survey also found that only 35% of projects have a formal policy permitting AI contributions.

The PHP releases of 21 October 2026 fix two critical vulnerabilities, and you should update now.

@thephpf itself calls the time the fix took a structural failure, one that was also caused by a lack of resources.

The hate now being poured over PHP changes nothing about that; broader funding would:

DNS Resolver Quad9 Will Leave France After Court Orders Piracy Blocking Penalty https://torrentfreak.com/dns-resolver-quad9-will-leave-france-after-court-orders-piracy-blocking-penalty/

Quad9 is leaving France over pirate site blocking orders, which makes it the second DNS resolver to leave the country. Quad9 will stop serving French users on November 24, after a Paris court set a €1,000 daily penalty for not blocking pirate tennis streams. Faced with this order and roughly 20 other pending French cases, Quad9 says that it has no other viable

Complying is impossible: The French courts have fundamentally misunderstood the role of the domain name system. #Quad9 makes cybersecurity protection and general services unavailable to French users https://quad9.net/news/blog/au-revoir-france/

The French courts yesterday handed down an unfavorable ruling against Quad9 in a major case that undermines the transparency and stability of the internet. As a result, Quad9 will no longer be able to offer its free cyberprotection service to users located in France effective November 24.

Happy Thursday to all mastodon folks, friends and supporters. Today we finished the day with over 700 onion seedlings and over 100 tomato seedlings into the soil. and yes, I think they've been suborned by claude because the solution is "way more code" instead of "simplify oom handling in an easy to understand way" and claude has a history of suggesting "create a vast new thing" before any other solution, as claude is a paperclip maximizer for software and it's gotten into everything.

something that's been bothering me about the phpocalypse - which, talking with @rain I was able to put a pin in, after they pointed out what they would do in a similar situation - is that this doesn't feel like a security patch at all.

this feels like a major feature upgrade.

which is weird in the circumstances.

the kind of patch that you would expect to see during a major all hands on deck kind of emergency would be the smallest, least-touch change possible - Rain suggested "abort on OOM" which is a nice sensible solution; sure it hits availability a little but in a way that synergizes nicely with defender goals (denying materiel to an attacker; reducing blast radius to "an instance becomes momentarily unavailable until the service gets restarted")

instead, this has a massive rework of how OOM situations are handled, with a completely new error handling mechanism added and -backported- to other prior versions?

that doesn't smell right at all.

and now a massive patch drops that MUST BE APPLIED NOW - so, intense pressure to comply without careful evaluation?

call me paranoid, sure. but this doesn't fit what I expect to see, and I don't like it, and I am feeling very suspicious that the people making these decisions are having their decisionmaking compromised in some fashion.

A class fix for fundamental memory management issues inside an interpreter is definitely a great candidate for vibe coding and will create no long term issues.

Very much hoping this isn't the case, of course.
