first of all: it's fine to not be into something. you don't have to actively engage with everyone's kinks. but don't go around kinkshaming

a lot of people are subscribed to the reactionary idea that there are certain taboo kinks that are inherently bad and/or should be shunned

these are the kinds of ideas that have evolved into the current propagandized stereotype of queer people being sexual predators

the (uncomfortable) truth is that, unless there is actual direct harm caused, there isn't really any kink that can (or should) be considered “too” kinky

this view is especially prominent when combined with the classic “but think of the kids!” argument - which, as always, often leads to kids being othered from communities that would otherwise claim to be protecting them

this idea also takes many forms (see: proship discourse, incest kinks, babyfur drama, etc) but it's ultimately all part of the same culture war. it also extends into art, regurgitating the age old “video games cause violence” argument

the cycle of abuse that this causes is quite easy to understand:
1. people with taboo kinks are made outcasts
2. abusers have a community that accepts them
3. victims develop taboo kinks as a trauma response
4. rinse & repeat

the amount of queer people that are actively harming the community by subscribing to these ideas is genuinely baffling. you'd think we'd know better than to use the enemy's weapon against ourselves

well, that was odd

clarification: “stealing” here is used to convey “violating the intellectual property rights of,” and not literal theft.

you cannot steal an idea.

how copyright works 101

if you steal from a corporation:
- the corporation sues you
- you go bankrupt

if a corporation steals from you:
- you sue the corporation
- they drown you in legal fees
- you go bankrupt

also “you violated our current rules about 5½ years ago, we'll now be taking action” is wild

someone reported me using DSA for my banner (the same as fedi) 💔

“we used AI for some of the art, which was then edited and refined by human artists”

it doesn't matter how much you polish the turd. I still don't want it in the game

the last point is something I struggle with, too. yes, I'm a hypocrite. but I can also tell you from experience that treating it like a game that you can “win” is a fool's errand. there is no “winning” in these arguments. you both end up looking like angry fools screaming at each other.

ultimately, it's the corporations at fault. we shouldn't put all the blame on the people who use it - that's what the companies want us to do.

if we put all the blame on the consumers then the corporations are absolved of blame.

inform the users, tell them about the alternatives, but don't harass them. harass the corporations.

also - if you're arguing with someone who's pro-AI and it's obvious it's not going anywhere, disengange. you're not going to change someone's mind by being more aggressive or rude towards them, you'll just make them think the anti-AI community is toxic (see: militant veganism)

when it comes to morals, I feel like AI usage is a lot like eating meat

almost everyone knows that animals at farms are treated horribly, that the meat industry is one of the leading consumer causes of global warming, that it's just generally bad

would the world be a better place if the world stopped eating meat? absolutely!
does eating meat contribute to global warming? yes!
is it easy to stop eating meat? if you're financially stable, yes!

and yet people still eat meat, why?
several reasons:
- everyone else does it
- it's affordable
- the options are often lacking when it comes to taste (vegan meat substitutes notoriously have a bad reputation)

to be honest, I don't think that KDE is acting in bad faith. they do genuinely seem to be trying their best, even if it doesn't look like it. from what I can gather, it does seem like they are actually trying to get an anti-AI policy.

nuance (scary word, I know) is important to take into account - it's way too easy to boil issues down to a black and white us vs. them mentality, but reality is never that simple. KDE isn't solely led by people who are on fedi for hours per day, or people who have thoroughly researched the effects of AI - there are very likely a lot of people at KDE (much like in real life) who have only heard about AI through praise from biased news outlets, word of mouth or in passing (see: XKCD 2501)

if you haven't actually researched the real harms of AI, and you haven't had someone you know tell you about it, it's remarkably easy to mistake it for just another tool. you have to remember, there's a considerable amount of older people in FOSS that can't keep up with all the tech that's being developed constantly

this isn't to say that ignorance is a good excuse (it isn't) but please consider that not everyone has the same information that you do, and please be reasonable

as someone who also has managed several communities in the past, I know how easy it is to fuck up in a way that makes it easy for you to be painted as a horrible person (especially if the moderation tools available to you are awful - like on gitlab)

not to mention, it's far too easy to forget that you're talking to another person when you're having an online conversation - you can't see the other person or what they look like.

is KDE perfect? absolutely not, nobody is
is KDE evil? I don't think so

why are you reporting me to me I'm literally me
