Belly scratches.

Hey fedi. I'm about to board a plane to Geneva. Something that I should visit, besides CERN?

TIL about FreeCORE:
https://freecore.org/

It's a fork of TrueNAS, keeping FreeBSD OS.

I tried my best, but the clouds had little mercy.

Most of the times, the sun was fully covered. But then they gave me some small windows of time to take some pics.

Me: oh cool! A solar eclipse.

Clouds: Hey there!

My old netbook sometimes reports more than 80°C of CPU temperature!

I've replaced the thermal paste, and made sure that fan and surroundings are clean, but no luck. The weird stuff is that, when I touch it, is not that hot. It's just warm. And if I stop using it for a minute, it returns to something like 60°C, without going through the 70s.

Not sure if it's some firmware/hardware issue (like, something giving me the wrong numbers), or is really that hot but I can't feel it by touch.

My homelab has been upgraded to 11.0 🎉

Mom, can we have a NAS?

No, we already have a NAS at home.

Ladybird is no longer accepting merge requests.

Of course, the reason is AI/slop.

So I had to install Windows 11 to a relative's laptop. He asked me to do that and I accepted.

He couldn't use a decent OS because he wants to play some videogames and stuff. He didn't want to learn anything unfamiliar, and I didn't want to teach anybody anything.

I naively accepted the task because it was gonna be easy: download .iso, dd .iso to a pendrive, and boot from the pendrive.

I was not that easy.

It took me a few days of research and work because the goddamn HP website had the chipset and SSD driver as a .exe file that downloads the actual driver. The windows 11 .iso doesn't have that driver and don't recognize the chipset nor the SSD. So it can't install.

The only way to install a Windows 11 system on that horrible laptop is to download an HP .exe called "HP cloud recovery tool", which is a custom installer of Windows that doesn't work without Internet.

And the only way to get that "cloud recovery tool" is from MS Store. From a Windows machine that I didn't have.

It's not the first time I say this to myself, and I'm saying it again: I'm not MS support and I shouldn't help anyone with Windows stuff.

I hope the next time I remember my own words.

This weekend I'll have something to read.

I've been using my Toshiba netbook for two days and I love/hate it.

The keyboard is very unergonomic. Maybe that's the reason netbooks are not popular anymore.

To find software that supports i686 machines is harder than expected. What's the purpouse of high level languages if not abstract the machine? Also I have found *zero* modern web browsers available for i686. Dillo works great for non-js websites, which are not a lot, sadly. Anything based on webkit crashes and I should try to find out why.

TUI/CLI stuff works OK, of course (Now I'm tooting with toot-cli), which kinda makes this thing ideal for hanging out in tilde servers.

But in general, it feels very cool to not need more than 32bits addr space and 2 GiB of RAM to do stuff. Of course I don't need a supercomputer to read some toots and to read some email!

Upgrading this Toshiba NB105.

Fortunately DDR2 prices are not that crazy. I also replaced the keyboard and the drive.

My cat is helping me with the cat hair inside the netbook.

In the mean time, I'm gonna watch videos of people disassembling this netbook. It's an old one, so it shouldn't be that hard.

The infosec hell was never users writing down their password in a post-it stuck to their monitor.

The true infosec hell is developers trusting centralized repositories of "open source" that nobody reads nor audits.

Again I have to battle against devs that, for pure convenience and laziness, put users and the company at the mercy of any random of the internet, with the willing to perform a supply chain attack.

Sending mail from residential ip be like:

It's easily solvable using a "free" SMTP relay. But the privacy benefits of self-hosting are lost.

I'm using smtp2go to deliver to outlook and gmail. I have no idea if smtp2go is good or no. Do you have any recommendation?

#mail #SelfHosting #email #relay

Me: I'm gonna self host a mail service on an old laptop, with my *very* residential and dynamic IP address. What could posibly go wrong?

Spamhaus: *checks ISP and IP range* You are not supposed to do that.

Outlook smtp server: "550 5.7.1 Get lost!"

Gmail: I don't like you. But it's only one mesage, and DMARC is good: You go to spam folder.

spambots: LOOKS LIKE MEAT'S BACK ON THE MENU, BOYS! 👹

Besides some test mesasges, 100% of the traffic is spambots sending invalid commands trying to find a vulnerability, I assume.

In the linux world I feel confident with my monitoring tools, iptables and fail2ban. But in NetBSD everything is new to me. So I have to be extra careful.

Is there a way to have nginx calling blocklistd in NetBSD?

Like, when it returns 444 or 403 statuses?

I'm selfhosting a cctv system, Frigate.

Two ip cameras and an old laptop.

I was able to check on my cats while I was on vacations. Really cool.

The only problem is that I couldn't find free/open ip cameras. I got two proprietary cameras that work with proprietary (and poorly written) android app. Had to use and old phone to set up the cameras, the rstp:// urls and static ip addresses. I hated every minute I spent on that app.

But frigate was really easy to install and configure. Sadly, it's linux-centric, like most of modern foss.

I am happy to announce that my @FrOSCon talk proposal has been accepted! I will speak about #NetBSD, hope to see you there!
