The US just sanctioned the entire International Criminal Court. Banks froze accounts, US tech vendors cut off licenses and updates, and YouTube pulled 700+ videos of possible war crime evidence. ⚖️
If one executive order can switch off a court, your family photos aren't safe on American clouds either. 🇪🇺

Trump is promising every American adult $5,000 if Republicans keep Congress. 💸
Small problem: presidents can't just hand out money. Congress controls the budget. And the bill would run past $1.2 trillion.

Already one year since I signed up for @pixelunion . Still very happy, keep up the good work. No one in my family misses gphotos. #immich
One executive order renamed Lake Ontario to "Lake America", and within days Google and Apple quietly redrew their maps. 🗺️
MapQuest refused. It shot to #1 in the App Store.
If Big Tech will bend reality on a map, what else bends under pressure?

A sanctioned ICC judge lost access to Amazon, Apple ID, iCloud, PayPal, Google, even her Alexa stopped responding. 🚨
One executive order, and your entire digital life can vanish if it lives on US-controlled servers.
Move your data to European, open-source infrastructure.
Isn't this an issue of Pixelfed in general?
Anyway, because I lost everything I decided to give up on traditional image sharing platforms and use @pixelunion instead. Non-destructive cropping and being able to share/embed those dynamic sources thanks to #Immich is a game changer; https://fosstodon.org/@stardust/116216311081064370

Meta is on trial for allegedly engineering its apps to be addictive for kids and teens. 📱⚠️
Not exactly shocking, but good to see it in a courtroom.
We built PixelUnion so your photos don't have to live on platforms designed to hook you.

€890 million. That's what the European Commission just fined Google for breaching the DMA. ⚖️
Self-preferencing in search. Blocking developers from mentioning cheaper options. Not a one-off, a pattern.
And the same logic can be applied to photos.
We just moved the AI that searches your photos onto our own GPUs 🚀
Big Tech thinks reading your photos is their business model. We think your memories belong to you 📸

Google Photos is cheap and you pay with your privacy. 🌍
Your photos can feed Google's AI. One innocent picture can get your whole account frozen overnight. And every face and location in your library sits ready for profiling, for years.
Your memories deserve a European home.
After seeing a post by @rolle about @pixelunion, I realised that this is the solution I was looking for for my active photo archive.
Currently I'm running Immich on a self hosted server via Yunohost, but the app and all uploaded files are becoming too large for me to maintain.
My 350+ GB of Google photos have just finished migrating (Yay!) and now I will set up a connection between my Immich and my Pixelunion domains to continue the migration of all photos I self host.
Quite a lot of photos, and more coming as I backup each one I take or adjust, so I have signed up for a yearly plan with 2TB of server space, but it's worth it to me to keep my photos available, but not hosted at a Big Tech company.
AI is eating the memory market. RAM prices have tripled. SSD costs are up. And Hetzner just raised server prices by up to 3x overnight. 📈
European cloud isn't getting cheaper.
On June 12, developers across Europe woke up to a 403 error. Not a bug. A geopolitical decision. ⚠️
The U.S. government banned Anthropic's most advanced AI models for European users overnight. No warning. No appeal. Just a kill switch.
If the infrastructure is American, someone else holds the keys.

🛡️ Dutch govt BLOCKS US tech takeover of DigiD infra to protect digital sovereignty! 🇳🇱🇪🇺
Under the US CLOUD Act, foreign powers could access vital Dutch data. At PixelUnion, we applaud this. Privacy is a right. Protect your photos like govt protects data on safe European soil! 📸✨

PixelUnion turns 1 today! 🎉
Thousands of people have switched from American big tech to a European alternative. We made the news. And we're just getting started.
To celebrate, we're upgrading all 1TB plans to 2TB. For free.
France ditched Windows for Linux across all government machines. The Gendarmerie alone is saving millions and their systems are more secure.
If governments are doing this, maybe there's something to it.
What if America leaves NATO?
We're diving into the hard truth about strategic autonomy, kill switches, and why you can't trust American tech giants with your most personal data anymore.
