at some point writing about my code got harder than writing my code

can’t use an sd card as a boot device but, but an SD card in a USB adapter? totally fine.

#Emacs: Remove obsolete version control systems to enhance file loading performance, especially over TRAMP (SCCS and SRC are historical tools, CVS and Bzr are obsolete; even Canonical migrated to Git. RCS is similarly obsolete, so removing these backends prevents unnecessary checks):

holy cannoli elpa is down?? weirdest reason I've seen a CI job fail

joke’s on you, i get another one next year (and in another 5 if i’m lucky)

on a related note, would recommend the pentium chronicles if you’re looking for a good book

turns out that the “intrinsic ILP analyzer” i built for research is quite literally intels dataflow analyzer 💀 there is nothing new under the sun!

overleaf's vim emulation not yanking/pasting from your clipboard with the y/p keybinds might be my newest pet peeve

I like when an older professor has exactly 1 student at any given time like a Sith lord

An experience i had in real-time a couple hours ago -- would recommend!!

sure sure I know you've tried looksmaxing. but have you tried emacsing?

I've been enjoying @jamescherti 's blog posts on Emacs configuration lately, nice quality-of-life improvements across the board.

i'm not even in chicago and i'm excited tor this

Today, Levent Alpöge and I have made public three results: finite-time blowup with smooth forcing for incompressible porous media, for Boussinesq, and for 3d incompressible Euler.

An elaboration of the previous post mentioning the bounded gaps between primes problem as an illustration of the opportunity cost of converting a fruitful problem such as this solely into a competitive benchmark. [Indeed, as I point out below, this already came close to happening back in 2013.]

As with most other problems worth studying in pure mathematics, the particular bound one gets on these gaps is not of much intrinsic importance. Improving Zhang's bound of 70 million, to 246, 188, or 6 would not, in itself, have significant impact on any other mathematical problem, let alone any real-world application, except for a small number of other analytic number theory problems in which a related numerical bound would also similarly improve. Even the twin prime conjecture, which asserts that the bound can be chosen to be 2, would only unlock a small number of immediate applications if the result is taken as a "black box", although the significantly more general and quantitative prime tuples conjecture of Hardy and Littlewood would be more useful in this regard. But again: the value of this problem lies not in the numerical bound _per se_, but rather in what the quest to study this problem and improve the bound reveals.

Let me first quickly review some key moments in the timeline on this problem. The Quanta articles https://www.quantamagazine.org/mathematicians-team-up-on-twin-primes-conjecture-20131119/ and https://www.quantamagazine.org/a-new-generation-of-mathematicians-pushes-prime-number-barriers-20231026/ in 2013 and 2023 respectively also do a good job of covering these events. I missed this news earlier, but legendary early OS and computer architecture researcher Jack Dennis died in March.

He was at MIT from 1949 -- before their first computer! -- until retirement and beyond, and did pioneering work on hardware support for time-sharing on the PDP-1 and on the memory and protection architecture of Multics.

Some of the many things he introduced include:

* segmented virtual memory
* capability-based security
* dataflow computation and architectures
* starting the SOSP conference
* probably being the first person to name a variable 'foo' (!)

Dithering is a heckuva thing. 4-bit color conveys a surprising amount of depth
